Sometimes in winter the playas around here can get covered in hoarfrost, usually by fog, turning them beautifully uncanny in the best sense. If we catch it, we (household) describe it as a visit by elfland.

I grew up in Wisconsin. I have seen all variety of ice. And it is beautiful. Watch out for black ice, though.

I envy you both, haven't seen a proper winter since I was eight years old, but have fond memories of hoarfrost appearing on my bedroom window officially marking the beginning of winter and the approach of Christmas.
