Somehow Darwin is alive and he is reunited with Alex. Unfortunately, Alex his it in his mind as soon as he turns his back Darwin is going to leave him again so Alex clings to Darwin for dear life.
If it makes you feel any better, Darwin will come back. It's part of his adaptive mutation. Even though Shaw blew him up with Alex's power that he balled up and shoved down his throat, he'll eventually form back together.
No, seriously, Darwin literally CAN'T die. Hel (Norse Death goddess and mainly from Thor!Verse) touched him with her finger which = instant death for anyone else. Darwin? TURNED INTO A FUCKING DEATH GOD!! He's solid.

And Alex is just all ";_; DON'T LEAVE ME, YOU SCARED ME WHEN YOU LEFT. YOU JERK." whilst literally clinging to Darwin but Darwin is just like "What. I don't-" and still lets him cling.

Hold On To Me Alex/Darwin Rated: teen
Alex keeps it together for an hour and forty minutes. That’s how long it takes Charles - or Professor X, as he’s calling himself now - to determine that nobody’s tampered with Darwin’s mind since he found his way back to consciousness (he rejects terms like resurrection or return from the dead) and to apprise him of all that’s happened in his absence (quite a lot).
After that, he’s all Alex’s, and Alex wastes no time getting him alone and latching on.
Darwin goes with it. He’s tired. Clawing his way back from literal dust took strength he didn’t even know he had, and right now just about everything feels sort of dreamlike: this damn castle he’s in right now, his conversation with Charles, the coarse carpet hairs that scrape the soles of his feet as Alex walks him awkwardly across the bedroom
