Charles/Erik, with an ugly duckling twist anonymous August 3 2011, 20:34:17 UTC
Charles and Erik grow up together either as mutants or humans. Either way, Charles is the fat, pasty kid that no one wants to hang out with while Erik is the epitome of cool and awesome. They are unexpectedly good friends and Erik is ubber protective of Charles and stops all the bullies while Charles is the one that really sees Erik for Erik.

Then they move away from each other or something and when they meet again they're adults and Charles has finally ~bloomed~. However, even with his new found grace and glory and sex appeal, and even though Charles isn't naive anymore and is clearly a suave and whip-smart young man, Erik is twice as protective (+ new rage / jealousy / possessiveness), wanting to stop all the new ill-intentioned people that are suddenly attracted to Charles and who want to take advantage of him.

BONUS: Charles is not actually any of the things he appears to be. He is still naive and innocent and gooey on the inside, and all his sex appeal and suaveness comes from hard practice, but he wants to convince Erik he's ( ... )

(I'm apologizing in advance because this differs from the prompt in that they don't exactly grow up together, but they... go through high school together? Seriously IDK. I apologize OP, but this is where my head went immediately with this prompt. DX)

For the most part, Charles kept to himself when he could, but it wasn’t a matter of preference so much as it was a basic need for survival. There were a lot of things about Charles-things he knew and things he couldn’t control, things he didn’t want to change-that set the other kids off, that made his peers seem to absolutely reject him at every advance.

It started around the time his telepathy made itself present-the on-set of puberty that brought with it a multitude of other equally fascinating and intensely frustrating changes that hardly left him time to toy with his new-found and-maybe-shameful? ability to read everyone’s mind around him.

When he wasn’t trying desperately to remove the acne or pretend that he wasn’t fat-Rubenesque his mother would say, but he hated that word ( ... )

Homeroom, Charles thought morosely when a paper ball hit the back of his head with unexpected accuracy, especially considering that Charles had chosen a seat in the front while his tormentors naturally lolled in the back. Charles wanted to look, but instead he did absolutely nothing. Not even when they hit him two more times, and the girl behind him-bless her kind little heart-sighed loudly in annoyance ( ... )

Erik’s voice was rough and low, but he’d asked Charles for a pencil just as innocently as he might ask anyone else, and it made Charles feel warm inside in a way he hadn’t felt in a long time. Not to mention that Erik had actually bothered to remember his name instead of using some slur about his weight.

He put it to memory because it made him feel good despite not really being much of anything, and because hearing Erik say his name made him actually like it for once. It made him feel almost normal, and he didn’t know how long it would be before he felt like that again.

(and of course this part is small because I wanted to end here for now but character limits are always busting my balls. =|)

Tehehehe I'm so glad to see you filling this! You're doing a wonderful job, don't worry your pretty head at all. This high school setting is great and aw, poor Charles, but of course he's prepared and has scouted out the school ahead of time and yay for Erik! I can't wait for more.

This fill is already breaking my heart and it's just barely started. Your character voice for Charles is just lovely. (-- And heart-breaking. Have I mentioned my heart splintering into a million tiny pieces yet?) Also, I think it, in some way, makes it better that you set it for high school rather than earlier childhood. It gives more kindness and character to Erik, that he would accept Charles no matter what, even after having aged and likely been privy to the prejudice of others, whereas some children are innocent enough to overlook or not even see differences but are not necessarily kind because they aren't conscious of any other way of being. Did that make sense at all?
Ah well. Point is: I am thoroughly enjoying this already. :)

(OK, some things happened but now I'm back.)

Erik never returned his pencil, and Charles didn’t bother to ask for it back-he had more where that came from, anyway-but he did find himself paying more attention to Erik because of it. At first, he wondered if Erik hadn’t returned it because he never found another pencil to use, but he realized after only a few days that Erik came to class with a different pencil each day-or none at all sometimes, which was slightly disconcerting considering the necessity of the tool.

Charles didn’t want to wonder things about Erik. He didn’t want to be curious about anything, even something as small as why Erik never seemed to have his own pencil, for fear of what he would unintentionally do to know these things. Erik might have seemed able to tolerate being near Charles, but he didn’t think Erik would be okay with Charles looking into his mind.

It was inevitable, he thought. Erik was the nicest anyone had been to him, and it made him curious and hungry to use his telepathy, despite his best ( ... )

As it turned out, Erik knew a lot more than Charles had originally given him credit for-either that or Erik was an incredibly adept learner. Erik easily took control of the experiment, and there was a moment when Charles was certain Erik found cutting open plant matter to be just as trite as he found it, and he wondered if Erik felt the same kind of boredness he felt listening to his teachers drone on. It startled him to think someone who looked like Erik could match him at the one good thing he had going for him.

And for a moment, just a split second, he knew just how smart Erik was, but just as quickly as he had done it, Charles pulled himself back in his own head with a snap and tensed with the effort to remain there. Once again, his curiosity had gotten the better of him ( ... )

He didn’t sleep that night and skipped school the next day to sleep in after exhaustion finally caught up with him. He knew he would have to go back the next day, but he hoped that would be enough time that maybe Erik would at least lose a little bit of whatever anger he had for Charles by the time he went back. After what Charles saw in Erik’s mind, he didn’t doubt Erik was stewing in his anger.

Going back to school was a task in itself because of this. Charles didn’t exactly look forward to it, but he didn’t usually go with an overwhelming sense of dread that told him going was a big mistake. He forced himself to go, really; trying to be small and invisible so maybe Erik wouldn’t see him, wouldn’t want to see him.

“Charles,” someone said behind him in the hall, and Charles whirled around and looked up, and he was stunned to find tall, blonde, beautiful Emma Frost was saying his name ( ... )
