Warning[s]: mild BDSM, sex, blood
#01 - Comfort
Frankie calls, her voice over the line thin like the wind blowing through trees, "My dad died," she whispers-he immediately puts down the contract he's been looking over and goes to her, offering what comfort he can.
#02 - Kiss
The first time they kissed-really kissed, though neither of them admitted to what it was-was the day he got the first contract signed; he called as soon as the meeting was over and when they saw each other at the corner she leaped into his arms and their lips met.
#03 - Soft
There are very few people he has a desire to treat gently, but there's something in his eyes that says he'd treat her with kid gloves if she'd let him.
#04 - Pain
He knows to not push her too far, not now that one slip-up could mean danger for not just her, but the baby too, but sometimes he can't help it-she's pretty when she cries.
#05 - Potatoes
Getting home late always makes him angry and upset, and he's in a foul temper over any number of stupid things when she plops the bowl of mashed potatoes on the table beside him; "Eat," she says, "before I shove them down your fucking throat", and that's all that it takes to make him laugh.
#06 - Rain
"Do you remember how we used to make love in the rain," she asks, and he looks up, "I remember," he says softly, reaching his hand out for hers; "I think I like this better," she murmurs, watching their granddaughters jump from puddle to puddle-and with a kiss he agrees.
#07 - Chocolate
Their third night in Paris is all about chocolate; they leave the sheets stained and sticky and for the rest of their stay they're both sure the maids are laughing behind their hands at the messes they've cleaned up since Mr and Mrs Burke have arrived.
#08 - Happiness
She calls him, bubbling over with happiness, and he knows as soon as he hears her voice; "You're pregnant," he says, his face splitting into a grin.
#09 - Telephone
"Toben Cade Burke, AGAIN," she said, laughing a little, "you have to stop throwing your phone when you get irritated with the talent."
#10 - Ears
Sometimes when she's doing little menial chores, she'll twist her hair around her finger and sing under her breath, completely unaware she's doing it-it was one of the first things he honestly loved about her.
#11 - Name
"Frankie Burke," she said, holding out her hand to meet a new client, but it was Toben's eyes she met, and they both had the same look on their faces-slightly incredulous, but overwhelmingly happy.
#12 - Sensual
There is a certain advance/retreat, forward/back to their relationship that is like a dance; to the outside world, it is obvious they love, they desire.
#13 - Death
There is a moment when she comes that she holds her breath, her eyes closing-and every time he understands over again why they call release the little death.
#14 - Sex
A year to the day, he takes her back to the hotel; waiting for her are roses, wine, and one decapitated Barney doll-she takes one look and laughs, throwing herself into his arms and kissing him hard; "You always did know the way into a girl's pants," she teases; "No, just yours," he laughs.
#15 - Touch
There are days they're both too busy to talk with meetings and appointments, but they always take the time to touch hands as they pass in the hall-and it's these little touches that keep them going.
#16 - Weakness
No matter how long he lives, she will always be his weakness, the one thing that will stop him in his tracks in a heartbeat.
#17 - Tears
Toben doesn't cry-it is a hard and fast rule that everyone who's met him knows-but the day their son is born, he is found by Tibby, standing in front of the nursery window, tears beginning to gather in his eyes; she acts unsurprised, but something in her stomach twists until he turns to her and smiles-"You should have seen her, Tibby," he says, "she was amazing, and he is amazing because of her."
#18 - Speed
They steal a few precious moments while the kids are napping; she pulls him tight against her body and says one word, "Hurry."
#19 - Wind
She loves to go whichever the way the wind blows and he loves to take her everywhere she's never been-together they see the world hand in hand.
#20 - Freedom
A long day of meetings leaves them both exhausted and grouchy, but when they slip into the car, they both grin finding freedom in a fast car.
#21 - Life
He's not sure the exact moment he knew he couldn't live without her, but he knew the exact second she became his life.
#22 - Jealousy
Walking down the street with her, the men check her out-he's come to expect it, after all-but today something about it drives him insane and when a man disregards him and says something vulgar to his wife, his jealousy rages and he turns toward him, already pulling his fist back; she touches his arm and her voice immediately soothes the rage-he turns back to her and gives her a look; "Mine," he says and her velvety laugh slips through the air between them.
#23 - Hands
Sometimes he catches himself simply staring at her hands wondering how such delicate things can be an extension of such a strong woman.
#24 - Taste
She holds out a piece of cake for him to try, and he takes it from her, setting it down on the table before turning her hand over in his and pressing his lips to her wrist-he'd rather taste her any day.
#25 - Devotion
In the time they are friends, 20 girls ask him out for dates or any manner of other random things from coffee to fucking, but without a single touch between them he is hopelessly devoted to her.
#26 - Forever
Neither of them takes "forever" lightly, though the entertainment bloggers seem to think they'll fall into the same traps as a million other celebrity couples who get together and fall apart like cheap china; neither of them are worried; they both know how to keep a promise.
#27 - Blood
He'll never admit to anyone how the scent of her blood on the air makes him feel wild and free all at once, nor how it makes need in ways he can't ever explain in words.
#28 - Sickness
He hated being sick-it always made him grumbly and frustrated; but he hated more when she was sick because it made him feel like he was helpless to help.
#29 - Melody
For days after listening to the band her cousin was in, they both walked around humming the songs; that's how they knew signing FL was a great idea; and they were right, of course.
#30 - Star
On their first anniversary he got her the best gift he could imagine; he registered one thousand stars in her name-that night he took her outside, and pointed to a section of sky: "A piece of heaven for my bit of heaven on earth," he murmured, kissing her softly.
#31 - Home
Nothing in the world was like coming home to her arms after time away; the sense of relief and peace never got old, and it never diminished.
#32 - Confusion
When she cried out in the night, he sat straight up, reaching for her immediately-his confusion was apparent but it didn't matter; all that mattered is that she needed him, and he was there.
#33 - Fear
They clung to each other, both of them mute with the horror; both praying for the safety of their eldest son-nothing was more terrifying than a car accident, especially when your child was the one driving.
#34 - Lightning/Thunder
He pushed her up against the tree as the storm raged around them, but it was not the thunder or the lightning that held his attention but it was the storm in her eyes held him captivated.
#35 - Bonds
She fought delicately against the silk that bound her, her hands spread wide, her body arched toward him as he used the ice over her skin, smirking as she moaned.
#36 - Market
They always fought over which wine was best, it never failed; she liked the drier, darker, almost blood red wines-and he liked the fruitier, lighter, clear crystal reds; it led to a great many rounds of stomping off aisles away from each other and just as many coming-together-in-the-wine-aisle moments, small kisses and apologies raining between them.
#37 - Technology
It was no secret he hated the computer, though he was forced to use it every single day; but nothing cheered him like opening a file and having a note from her attached-in fact, he almost started liking the infernal machine before long.
#38 - Gift
He liked to buy her things, sometimes extravagant, sometimes silly, and gift them to her when she least expected it; there was something about watching her eyes light up that made his stomach do that funny twist that reminded him how much he loved her.
#39 - Smile
Once, when they were still friends, he caught her with the ghost of a smile as she sat at his table, waiting for him to join her; when he asked what she was thinking about the smile grew-"I was thinking about you," she said, and his world spun out of control.
#40 - Innocence
"Can you believe anything so precious and perfect came from the likes of us," she asked, her gaze locked on their son; "can you believe anything so INNOCENT came from us," he countered, both of them grinning at each other in the pale light of the hospital room.
#41 - Completion
"Oh Gods, Toben," she said, her voice rising sharply as he bit over her pulse, both of them shuddering with release.
#42 - Clouds
The sun peeked out from behind the clouds, shining down on them as they walked through the streets of Paris hand-in-hand; ten years had changed nothing between them but their ages.
#43 - Sky
They often laid in bed, curled up together-her body in front of his, held tight against him-looking out of the window at the open sky, whispering about life and the future, both of them content to never move.
#44 - Heaven
He wasn't a spiritual man, but he knew if there was a heaven, and if he was going there, it would feel just like holding her in his arms forever.
#45 - Hell
"Go to HELL," she yelled, her eyes flashing, and in the next moment he had her pinned to the wall, kissing her fiercely, his breath coming as hard and fast as hers did-the anger giving way to passion.
#46 - Sun
Bright light suddenly streamed into the room and he sat straight up in bed, grumbling and growling as he flopped back down, the covers covering his head and he dragged them up; "Toben, get up, it's a beautiful day," she said, laughing a little as he muttered at her, "and stop telling me to fuck off, it's just sunshine."
#47 - Moon
"Your eyes are like the moon," he said softly, leaning to kiss her, "always full, always just as seductive"; "Full of love," she murmured, "full of you."
#48 - Waves
The sound of the sea filled her, as he filled her, both stealing her breath in a single heartbeat; she managed a gasp, then another, as both his thrusts and the waves rocked her gently.
#49 - Hair
They both stopped threatening to cut their hair when they realized how tender a subject it really was; several large fights over vague-almost teasing-threats of haircuts was more than enough for both of them.
#50 - Supernova
When he got mad he tended to do it loudly and quickly; she once likened it to watching a star explode which made him laugh and tug her close so he could kiss her; "What's it like being married to a supernova," he asked, and she smiled almost serenely; "I wouldn't wish for anything different," she said, laughing her velvety laugh.
