Genre: Drama/Angst/Humor
Rating: PG-13 --R.
Status: Complete.
Set: Gamma.
Summary: Two different sides always are visible to Maya Fey-Phoenix and Edgeworth’s.
Notes: Spoilers inside for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on DS. Some are sentences that I think could have happened outside the game. Some possible good friendship/flirting implied.
Also, some of the themes are switched on purpose, to fit with some of the sentences.
#01 - Ring
Maya wondered which one really loved to throw themselves in the fire of combat-after all, the prosecutor and the defense attorney took their time preparing blows to exchange to each other, duking it out like they were in a boxing ring in the courtroom.
#33 - World
Miles Edgeworth started seeing the world as black and white the moment his father was shot and killed; but now he had to question it as Phoenix and Maya uncovered the evidence that he, indeed, did not kill his own father-and damns them both for it, because it is something he has to get used to all over again.
#03 - Memory
Miles looked at Maya in shock as she objected to Lotta Hart’s testimony, remembering that he was usually the one shouting that at Phoenix and the incident of the classroom court case came to mind very clearly-however, he now questioned if he was wrong to become a prosecutor instead of a defense attorney.
#02 - Hero
“Thank Edgeworth,” Phoenix had told Maya when she was released on bail for her outburst in court at his trial; “It seems he appreciated what you did more then he could ever tell you, Maya.”
#04 - Hope
“Edgeworth couldn’t have killed his own father!” Maya screamed at Phoenix, her eyes angered at such a thought-and she saw Miles looked shocked at her conviction, and then smiled, nodding his thanks.
#45 - Eclipse
As much as Miles wanted to believe that someone else killed his father, the shadows of his dreams still tell him that it was he who killed his father, and no one else..
#05 - Midnight
“One more day . . . only one more day left till DL-6 is closed for the rest of my life,” Miles Edgeworth told Maya before she had left the detention center with Phoenix-“Though, I do wonder if it was any good getting Wright involved when I wanted him to stay away.”
#06 - Hurricane
Phoenix Wright was the most unpredictable attorney that anyone had dealt with, and Miles knew that first hand-only this time, he was swept up in the case, like two lovers who could not be together-because his innocence was on the line.
#43 - Search
Maya was disappointed that their expedition did not produce any new evidence, but she did not know that she took the bullet from von Karma as he tasered her-and that she would be the ace in the hole to seal up DL-6 forever.
#07 - Wings
“You know,” Phoenix told Edgeworth when they thought Maya was out of earshot, “If it wasn’t for Maya pulling that bullet out of von Karma’s hand, I wouldn’t have been able to win-she’s helped in more then one way-and I can’t figure out why she thinks she’s no use when she keeps the office running so smoothly.”
#42 - Talk
Miles blinked as he saw Phoenix walk over to him and held out his hand, indicating that he should shake it as he said, “Edgeworth- I want to thank you for bailing Maya out of jail-I honestly didn’t have the money, with everything going on.”
#37 - Lies
“I didn’t do a thing, Wright,” Miles replied succinctly, refusing the man’s hand shake; “Gumshoe just told you that so you didn’t think I was as much of an asshole as you thought I was.”
#08 - Cold
Now that the trial had ended-and Miles was cleared of killing his father-he no longer felt like an cold-hearted angry bastard and had actually thanked Phoenix, smiling for the first time in years.
#09 - Red
Maya hated the color red because it reminded her of Mia’s death-Miles hated it because he could never seem to get the blood off his hands-even if it was a nightmare that he had killed his own father.
#10 - Drink
Detective Gumshoe took them out to a fancy restaurant to celebrate Phoenix’s latest victory, and Miles noticed that Maya stuck to water, while the rest of them stuck to beer and champagne.
#11 - Run
She ran away after she thought she was useless, Miles noticed, and he actually missed seeing the spirit medium in training in court-it wouldn’t be the same now that the entertainment was gone, and he was left to deal with Wright alone, with no eye-candy to stand beside him.
#12 - Temptation
If she wasn’t so stuck on trying to find a waterfall and helping Phoenix with his cases, Miles might have put his professionalism aside and asked Maya to dinner, to see if she was his type.
#13 - View
The expression on Phoenix’ face was worth a thousand words, Maya thought-and she had a good view of it when his mouth dropped as Larry handed Edgeworth his stolen lunch money from years before, with a smirk on his face.
#14 - Music
Maya sighed as she heard the 1812 Overture, reminded of the job she used to have before perusing her training-and wondered if Phoenix and Edgeworth would ever learn to get along.
#15 - Silk
The first time she came back after her long break, Maya noticed a clear package and opened it, seeing that it was a black strapless dress, high heel shoes and a matching silk scarf with a note written inside that said “You’ll look more professional if you wear this in court-E.”
#16 - Cover
She was glad her black hair hid the blush on her face as she saw Edgeworth walking into her office, holding out a box of chocolate; “Well, you took your time-Wright asked me to give these to you-oh hell with it-nice to see you around again,” he said, looking away as she took the box and opened it, offering the prosecutor one.
#17 - Promise
The day she told him that she was going to stick around and help Phoenix was the day he resigned from being a prosecutor-but that didn’t stop him from visiting the office to see them once in a while.
#18 - Dream
The same nightmares plague them-even if the murderers were put away in prison.
#19 - Candle
Miles sighed as he opened the door to Phoenix and Co., then blinked in surprise as he saw Maya holding a lighted candle in her hand and shooing Phoenix out of the office, screaming, “I need to train, so go on-and find me a waterfall I can purify myself in!”
#20 - Talent
The prosecutor thought he was seeing things the first time Maya’s chest was bigger, but he did see Mia’s picture in the photo that Phoenix gave to him-and realized that perhaps, Maya Fey wasn’t all that useless if she could channel Mia through her body.
#21 - Silence
Miles usually was sure of himself, but even he couldn’t scream objection when Mimi Vasquez blantally lied under oath-he only yelled it after realizing the truth and Wright needed him to intervene after all.
22 - Journey
“Our paths are different,” Maya told him when Edgeworth had grabbed her arm before she could leave the building-“You’re a lawyer and I’m a spirit medium-so don’t take me under your wing.”
#23 - Fire
“I swear, Nick, get Larry away from my candles before he ignites into flames in the office!” Maya bellowed, glaring at the Butz for having his coat sleeve dangling over the candle flame on her desk.
#24 - Strength
As many times as he was confronted with the nightmare of his father’s murderer, Miles didn’t believe he was strong-no, he honestly thought Maya was stronger, for putting up with so much in the short time she was working as Phoenix’s partner-and of course, for putting up with going to jail so much.
#25 - Mask
Edgeworth always seemed frigid when he was in the courtroom, but Maya knew he was capable of other things-even if he wasn’t good at them most of the time.
#27 - Fall
Phoenix slammed into something cold as he opened the door to his work-which was followed by Maya’s familiar voice saying, “Careful, Nick-I need that to start carving my Samurai Warrior action figures!”
#26 - Ice
“Maya,” Nick replied, rubbing his forehead, “I don’t understand why you need a five foot brick if you’re going to just make statues that are three feet tall and will only stay in someone’s freezer.”
#28 - Forgotten
It would be a long time before anyone could forget the legacy that Miles Edgeworth had left behind-or Phoenix Wright, for that matter.
#29 - Dance
Maya never saw Miles dance-he would never be so bold as to offer her that-but she did notice that he did not hesitate to tango with Phoenix in the courtroom at every opportunity, and Maya had begun to appreciate that it was how they showed that they cared about the other.
#30 - Body
Maya hated the fact that Mia had to change her body features to talk to Phoenix-and wondered if all men needed eye-candy to just listen to a woman.
#31 - Sacred
Miles had nothing sacred-but treasured the time that he can at work because he knew that despite pissing people off, they still cared and always had his back if something should have happened to him.
#34 - Formal
The one quirk that Miles had about Maya was that her clothes were too weird to be ever be proper in a courtroom setting.
#35 - Fever
“If you’re looking for Maya,” Phoenix said, wrinkling his nose as Miles was coming into Wright and Co, “I made her go home, since she almost threw up on me-and was starting a fever.”
#36 - Laugh
The spirit medium always remembered Edgeworth’s chuckling-but it was always remembered by a court case-and always when he was sure he was going to win.
#38 - Forever
Maya sighed as another ten minute recess was called-this stupid trial was lasting forever, it seemed-but she did wave to Edgeworth when he walked out of the courtroom and was surprised to see him smile and nod back at her in return.
#39 - Overwhelmed
One could get buried under the mountain of paperwork that Miles had brought home with him night after night-but he wondered just how much pressure Maya was under while she was working with Phoenix, and decided he would keep the paperwork, and she could keep Phoenix Wright under control.
#40 - Whisper
“I see you like the dress,” Miles murmured in Phoenix’s ear when the two were definitely out of earshot of the spirit medium; “I thought it would represent you better and make the judge take you more seriously.”
#48 - Unknown
Miles didn’t understand why he felt the need to knock on the door to Wright and Co, but he wanted to leave on good terms-he didn’t want Maya mad at him, and for the life of him, did not know why he cared so much about the girl.
#46 - Gravity
He came here with a somber look on his face, but when she opened the door, Maya’s shoe slid and she fell on the ground, with Edgeworth catching her firmly, noticing that she was wearing the dress he had got her-
#50 - Breathe
-and it took a moment for the former prosecutor to realize that he was still holding her as he was listening to the beating of his own heart, wondering why he was taking so long to say goodbye.
#44 - Box
“Take the box,” Miles said, thrusting it at Maya when she tried to ask why he was here-“It should be enough to cover the cost of the last case-and for anything else you might need; also, tell Wright that he’ll do fine, and that he has a lot more competition to deal with then just me if he’s going to survive in the courtroom.”
#47 - Lock
“Miles-don’t tell me it’s nothing-you’re not the type to do this,” Maya pleaded, reaching out for his arm, hoping that she could see something in the man’s face-only to find a melancholy look in his eyes.
#41 - Wait
As he was walking out, Maya tried one last time and grabbed his arm, then embraced the man, hoping he would return the favor-and as he did, she wished that he didn’t have to walk out of the office, knowing that she didn’t want to wait a lifetime for him to show himself again.
#32 - Farewells
Maya’s farewell was tearful as she said she would see him again, while Miles just shrugged, turned around and muttered, “You’ll do fine, Maya-I guarantee it.”
#49 - Highway
When she came into the office the next day, Maya found a note on her desk from Nick and choked as tears came to her eyes, whispering, “Miles Edgeworth was killed last night in a accident on the highway-I’m sorry, Maya.”
