#01 - Air

The air was stale and smelled of blood and sex in the room where he found her-drugged and unconscious, her body used and suffering from a pregnancy he both feared and hated.

#02 - Apples

Their young daughter had asked, “What’s an apple?” and after his wife burst into tears and fled the room, leaving their daughter both concerned and curious, he suddenly wasn’t sure how to explain to his daughter that the reason the two of them became friends in the first place was because he had been eating a shockingly green apple-something that had both amused and astonished a younger Kara.

#03 - Beginning

She laughed as she climbed out of her Viper and she called out to him: “Apollo, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,” and he grinned back-Starbuck was certainly one of the more interesting people in Basic Flight and he was thrilled to be her wingman.

#04 - Bugs

As they laid there, entangled with his hand running up and down her bandaged side, he urged her to tell him about what happened on New Caprica and when she finally began to speak, all the she could say was that there were bugs in the cell where they kept her and sometimes, when she wakes up at night, she could swear they were still crawling on her.

#05 - Coffee

He woke up in the hospital bed, his shoulder throbbing, and found a cup of actual coffee beside his bed-still hot-and a note scribbled in familiar, shaking handwriting that said “I’m so sorry, Lee…” and it was then he knew he needed to talk to her before this broke them.

#06 - Dark

His nightmares became much worse after the mission to the mine and he was far worse at hiding it than she, so the next night he cried out, she slid out of her bunk and over to his, easing herself beside him to murmur quiet nothings of comfort into his ear, and she briefly wondered how she let him slip so far into the dark.

#07 - Despair

He caressed his lips against her throat, her shoulders, down the slope of her breasts and finally felt some of the tension and sobbing ease from her form-it was then he knew he was managing to break through her despair.

#08 - Doors

He was all closed doors to everyone else but, at night, with his body curled vulnerably against hers, he silently willed Kara to try and open him up-and she did.

#09 - Drink

When Lee saw how much Kara had changed-the scars, the hair, the frightening new demeanor-he silently wondered if he would be able convince her to get a drink with him, to talk about what happened with her, even though they were both married and supposedly faithful to their partners.

#10 - Duty

Kara secretly wondered what would happen if she rebelled against her duty to the fleet and did what she wanted to do for once-and then Lee walked into the Ready Room and silently reminded her that she had duty to him as well.

#11 - Earth

Kara knew something was wrong when he woke her up in the middle of the night to ask her if she really believed they were going to find Earth, but it wasn’t until she scrambled for the light beside their bed and she saw his eyes rimmed in red and his tear stained cheeks that she really wanted to hold him and remind him that bright, shiny futures really were possible-look at us now, she would say, look at us now.

#12 - End

Her plan was relatively simple-she had to get her Viper into the base star and shoot its power source-but what Kara didn’t know was that the missiles wouldn’t work and she would be making a final call to the Pegasus Actual that this was her end and goodbye.

#13 - Fall

He found her curled up on their bed, pale and shaking, her arm limp and bruised and when he asked her why she hadn’t seen Cottle, she replied with a quiet “It was just a little fall, Apollo,” something that scared him because he knew she was lying, that she had hurt herself again.

#14 - Fire

He had told her that Kara was playing with fire, but when she looked up at him, her eyes wide and vulnerable, and told him that she wasn’t playing, she was just sick of denying what was bigger than both of them, he took her to his bed-gentler than their first attempt but in no way lacking their desperate need for each other.

#15 - Flexible

They were the last two standing in a particularly drunken game of Triad and he tried to raise the stakes by talking about her uncompromising nature when she decided to up the ante even further by asking him, rather loudly, why he wanted her to learn Yoga when he was flexible enough in bed for the both of them.

#16 - Flying

The night after she flew the blackbird, he decided to ask her why she loved to fly so much and she looked over at him and told him in a voice thickened with unshed tears that she hated it some days, days when memories of her mother were too close, and that this was one of them.

#17 - Food

When they were younger and far more innocent, the best way to make Kara happier was to bribe her with food but now, as she sat there, curled up on his couch, he knew she needed something very different him-something he was now willing to give.

#18 - Foot

Lee stuck his bare foot, wiggling toes and everything, on her lap, expecting that bright laugh and eye roll, and when she started running her hand over him with gentle fingers and a soft, relaxed smile, he silently thanked the Gods for the enigma that was Kara Thrace.

#19 - Grave

As he lay there, talking about how close he came to making space his grave, she crawled into the bunk with him, much to his astonishment, and curled her body against his as she promised him that, even if it would be the last thing she would ever do, he would be buried on Earth.

#20 - Green

She was wearing black that night and when he asked her why, she leaned forward, grinning conspiratorially, and whispered: “You know, Apollo… military green does shit for my skin tone.”

#21 - Head

Her head rested against his bare chest and he treasured the feeling of her soft hair in his fingers, the gentle curve of her body against his, and her relaxed state of slumber.

#22 - Hollow

When Lee found her curled up in a corner of his room and she woke up and told him in a quiet and broken voice that she felt hollow, he pulled her up into his arms and set about making her feel a bit more full.

#23 - Honor

They were curled up tightly and Lee was holding on to her like she was going to disappear, crying quietly over nothing and absolutely everything, and she tried to quiet him with the only thing that was on her mind: “Lee… I’ve never been the one to ask this before but stay with me-Let me have the honor of marrying you.”

#24 - Hope

Lee sat there beside her hospital bed, stroking his hand up her fractured fingers, and for some odd reason, he had hope that they would actually be okay this time.

#25 - Light

She heard movement beyond the door of her dark cell and then him calling her name and when the door finally opened, light flooding the room, all she could see was Lee “Apollo” Adama, her personal god.

#26 - Lost

She had managed to escape from her own personal hell and took off running-it wasn’t until later, when Lee had a gun to her head with a mixed but still secretly tender look on his face that she admitted she may have gotten a touch lost.

#27 - Metal

She started panicking, her eyes rolling back into her head and the walls closing in, at the feel of cold hands on her stomach and she couldn’t calm down until she heard his soft, warm voice eliminating her metallic nightmares

#28 - New

It had been several months of avoiding and awkwardness when they finally met in an empty hallway and both awkwardly began to say that they needed a fresh start when Kara suddenly looked at him and said, “Hi, I’m Sta--Kara… I’m basically new around here and I need a wingman.”

#29 - Old

There was something about wearing Lee’s old shirts that she loved, craved even-something that reminded her of his warmth and self and allowed her the feeling of safety she needed to paint in the silence of their shared quarters.

#30 - Peace

She lay beside him, her tense body soothed by his hand running up and down her back, and he loved that he could give her this bit of peace at night.

#31 - Poison

The bottle of poison she used sat beside her slumped and now-cold body and he marveled at the injustice of it all because he was coming to her office to apologize for his behavior towards her and to finally tell her what made no difference now but might have, would have, stopped her from taking her own life.

#32 - Pretty

He desperately wanted to tell her how pretty she looked in that blue dress--all he managed was that her knee looked ‘pretty good’--but judging by the way she gave him that secret smile of theirs as they danced, he was pretty sure she got the message.

#33 - Rain

He held her trembling form against his in the downpour, ignoring the look of shock from her husband and the malice in his wife’s glare, as she sobbed, letting out emotion she had shared with no one, until he picked her up and took her out of the rain.

#34 - Regret

Lee hadn’t been quite sure what to do when he first saw her, lying there all fragile in a hospital bed, his father right by her side, but he did know that he regretted not being there for her first.

#35 - Roses

When he discovered that one of the agricultural ships had began to grow roses-deep, sensual red roses-he set about sneaking five aboard the Galactica and into her locker so he could see that quiet smile of hers again.

#36 - Secret

Kara’s greatest and darkest secret-that she loved him-was one she was determined to never speak of, one she was determined to ignore, and the only one Lee was absolutely determined to drag from her lips.

#37 - Snakes

Kara had bitterly complained about the name of their birds and when Lee went off on an a spout about why the Viper was named after the viper, a snake-that they were serpentine, smooth, quick, deadly-she pretended to have a dramatic case of the snaps that led to even more dramatic snoring and congratulated him on yet again finding some way to put her to sleep.

#38 - Snow

Their first months spent on Earth, a place they did indeed find eventually, involved Kara looking out of a cold window until the first snow fell-when he found her standing outside, barefoot and bare armed, looking up at the sky and crying her eyes out, saying over and over again, “Look, Lee… it’s snow… snow.”

#39 - Solid

She had run in a lot of situations-good and bad-and on all sorts of track but there was nothing that could compare to the warm solidity that was the Galactica, her true home.

#40 - Spring

After he finally cornered her and made love to her until he made it perfectly clear that she was his and no one else’s, a certain spring returned to her step and she started smiling in a way he had missed for far too long.

#41 - Stable

“Wait,” she said while laughing good naturedly, “you actually think Lee and I have a ‘stable’ relationship-are you frakking insane?!”

#42 - Strange

He pulled her against his chest as they lay there, spooned together, and he started to speak in quiet tones about how strange this was for them but how good it was at the same time-to be this comfortable with each other and to be this free.

#43 - Summer

She was curled up in a chair, her head leaning back, exposing her neck, and he thought she was vulnerable enough to ask her what she missed most-he was right: she responded with the summer because of all the daylight and warmth.

#44 - Taboo

They didn’t speak for months on end-all topics too taboo for them-until he found Kara sitting in the observation deck by herself smoking a precious cigar and she silently offered to share it with him-Lee took her up on the offer.

#45 - Ugly

Lee had found Kara hunched over in his shower, the cold water beating mercilessly down on her even colder body, and he pulled her out and wrapped a towel around her as she sobbed about how ugly and used she was, how worthless she was-he could only hold her and try and soothe away her demons.

#46 - War

They had been at war for years with the Cylons when one day, she turned to him while his hand rested on the gentle swell of her stomach and told him that she would never have believed that war could have led to something good between them.

#47 - Water

As Lee pulled her back against his chest in their make-shift tub-gentle enough to not frighten her but forceful enough to remind her he knew she was going to be alright-she relaxed into the hot water, feeling truly clean for the first time in a long time.

#48 - Welcome

She found him standing outside her office hatch, with his hand raised as if he were about to knock, and she welcomed him in-she could only assume that if he had made the effort to come, she might as well invite him in to talk for a few moments.

#49 - Winter

After Kara had returned from New Caprica, broken and scarred, Kara was like winter-cold, unapproachable-to all but him and he took advantage of this, trying to ease the ice from her eyes with kindness and violence.

#50 - Wood

She had spent the first twenty minutes of what was supposed to be a CAG-Commander meeting tracing the wood grain in his dark coffee table and when Lee finally got off of a phone fight with the President, he couldn’t help but take her hand in his and begin to trace her hand and fingers in the same, gentle manner.
