Fandom: One Tree Hill
Pairing: Brooke Davis/Lucas Scott
Theme set: Gamma
Rating: PG? (nothing but one swear word)
Notes: This set is arranged in chronological order rather than from #1 through #50.
#13: View
When Brooke finally gets a good view (of Lucas' body, that is), she assesses it and, with a wink at Peyton, quickly decides that she likes what she sees.
#45: Eclipse
The first time Brooke seduces a boy she's in third grade ("What's a solar eclipse?" she'd asked, and ten minutes later she'd been playing footsie under the table with Tom Weiler); now she thinks it's a pity Lucas isn't that gullible.
#21: Silence
As they sit by Peyton's bed, watching over her, Brooke looks over at Lucas and in the silence something seems to click; it could just be attraction, Brooke tells herself as Lucas smiles and looks away, but her heart's beating much too quickly for that.
#10: Drink
The night Brooke makes him get the tattoo, Lucas asks her why she can't just stick to getting him drunk, and she grins, kisses his cheek and says, "normal's really not my style."
#41: Wait
With Peyton, Lucas hadn't wanted to wait, too desperate to feel her bare skin against his own; with Brooke, he doesn't have to, although as she arches up against him, he's sure it would be more than worth it if he did.
#27: Fall
One of Brooke's cardinal rules in relationships is never fall in love, and she knows that it's a good rule, but around Lucas, scary as it is, she can't help herself.
#11: Midnight
Lucas is pretty sure he's dreaming when he feels the bed dip, but then Brooke whispers, "hiya, stranger," and he rolls over, meeting Brooke's lopsided smile with one of his own.
#37: Lies
"I don’t give a rat's ass about you, either of you!" Brooke wants to scream, when she catches them together, but that would be a lie, and Brooke knows Lucas will see through her, so she does the only thing that makes sense: she leaves.
#08: Cold
"You know," Brooke says coldly, as she shrugs Lucas' hand off her shoulder as easily as she shrugs off his apology, "I thought I'd learned to tell the good guys from the cheaters; I guess I thought wrong."
#3: Memory
Brooke remembers her mom telling her, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger; after Lucas, she just adds it to her mental 'Mom's-bullshit' list.
#32: Farewells
Brooke cries for two months after catching Lucas cheating on her with Peyton, but then she says goodbye to him, her old self, and her philosophy on bad relationships; now she says: I don't get angry; I get even.
#16: Cover
She's been avoiding Lucas, and being a bitch to everyone else - with Peyton bearing the brunt of it - but all that's just a cover to hide the fact that her heart's still breaking.
#47: Highway
As Keith drives, Lucas looks out the window, seeing Brooke instead of his own reflection; all he can wonder is if he's sure a fresh start is worth more than what he's leaving behind.
#33: World
If there's one thing Brooke's learned this summer, it's that the world doesn't stop turning for one broken heart, and she's starting to be okay with that.
#30: Body
She's a growing girl with growing needs, so, as she stalks across the yard to lay her terms down for Felix, Brooke doesn't think that her wanting her next-door neighbor purely for his body is something she should be censured for.
#28: Forgotten
"It is," Brooke insists, when it's okay for Lucas to ask her how she's holding up, after his return from Charleston, "I just make sure I don't think about it."
#48: Unknown
That's what what Anna's doing in the photobooth on dare night is to Lucas, and yet the moment she's out of his sight, he's wondering about another unknown entirely: Brooke.
#15: Silk
Felix buys a gorgeous red silk dress for her to celebrate her election, grinning slyly as he makes a quip about helping her take it off after the party, but all Brooke can think about is what Lucas will say if he sees her in it: she decides he wouldn't approve, so she returns it the next day.
#34: Formal
He'll never admit it, but it hits Felix that night, as he watches Brooke pretend to not-watch the ongoing flirtation between Lucas and Anna: he can't fill the void that Lucas has created--he doesn't even come close.
#50: Breathe
At the wedding, they both lose the ability to breathe, for reasons that neither expected: Brooke, when she reads Lucas' best-man speech; Lucas, when he finds out that she's moving to Cali.
#23: Fire
Peyton won't have to ask if it was worth it, when Brooke rings her up an hour later announcing her dramatic yelling session cum break up with Felix; Brooke's loyalty never lay with him.
#09: Red
Lucas spends an entire day redecorating his room and the rest of the night painting the door, forfeiting an A on his latest English essay in the process, but the look on Brooke's face when he shows her her new room makes everything worth the effort - of course, so does knowing that she broke up with Felix.
#26: Ice
Her fear is so real that her hands are cold as ice when she runs up to Lucas, trying not to think about the fact that Nathan may never wake up; the whole time her heart beats to a rhythm: 'that could've been Luke'.
#18: Dream
Nathan doesn't dream of Brooke again till three weeks after he's discharged, but he doesn't nail her in this one, either; the whole time he feels as though she's got Lucas' imprint stamped all over her body.
#12: Temptation
With Felix gone, and Lucas always around when she needs him, Brooke's tempted to give him another shot, to let him try to fix the emptiness he left in her the first time he cheated on her; with every passing day, she finds she's losing another reason not to.
#49: Lock
Brooke's not one to hide what she thinks or feels, but she wishes Lucas had kept his feelings and souvenirs from his relationship with Peyton under lock and key where she couldn't see them, instead of in a flimsy box that falls over and shows her everything she's been trying to hide from.
#05: Run
Lucas did it first with Charleston, Brooke reminds herself, as she backs out of his house trying not to cry; it doesn't make her running away from his confession feel any less shitty.
#24: Strength
Lucas first realized how tough Brooke is the morning after Peyton got drugged at the party; now he hopes that same strength will see her through everything he won't be able to while she's away in California this summer.
#22: Journey
Brooks spends the entire plane ride back to Tree Hill planning what she's going to say to Lucas when she sees him - something sassy: "hey, good looking, did you miss me?", or sweet: "I tried not to, but I spent all summer thinking about you", or fun: "so what good parties did I miss?" - but once they're face to face, she blanks, and nothing she says is what she actually means.
#29: Dance
What Brooke hadn't been counting on, when she demanded Lucas dance with at least one other girl at the party, was that he'd actually take her up on it - with Rachel.
#17: Promise
Brooke knows she's the one who initiated the whole 'non-exclusive' thing, and she knows she swore she'd live up to it, but that doesn't stop the hot stab of jealousy she feels when Rachel looks at Lucas like he's her next meal; she's never been good at keeping promises anyway.
#20: Talent
Before she discovered her untapped flair for fashion design, Brooke used to tell Peyton, "you have your art, Luke and Nate have basketball, Tutor Girl has her music, I mean, even Mouth has his whole DJ-commentator...ing thing, and all I have is the squad and my body."
#42: Talk
Lucas has been trying to renegotiate the terms of their non-exclusivity, but every time he asks if they can talk, Brooke just smiles and murmurs, "I have a better idea," before leaning in to distract him.
#44: Hope
The look on Brooke's face as she says, "I wanted you to fight for me," should break Lucas' heart, but he thinks that that's possibly the light at the end of his tunnel.
#25: Mask
Brooke thinks about the way Lucas reacted to finding her and Chris, limbs obviously entangled under the covers, and thinks that maybe she isn't the only one who’s been pretending this whole time.
#04: Box
"This is what I spent all summer doing, okay?" Brooke says, tearfully, as she drops the box of letters on Lucas' bed, "Not boys, not alcohol, but eighty-two letters, and they're all addressed to you."
#Sacred
Lucas cherishes the emotion in each and every letter Brooke's written: anger, pain, regret; he throws Peyton's stuff out that night, because these letters are more than enough to remind him not to fuck up again.
#40: Whisper
Everything's so new the first night they're back together - exclusively - and Brooke almost doesn't hear his, "I love you, pretty girl," whispered against her mouth as he kisses her.
#46: Gravity
When Whitey yells at her -- "you obviously don't understand the gravity of the situation, Ms. Davis, or you wouldn't be laughing, because I'm not the only one who's seen more of you than I ever wanted to!" -- all Brooke can think about is Lucas telling her how beautiful she looked onscreen flaunting herself for the sake of the aliens, and she can't stifle her smile.
#43: Search
Lucas isn't sure what it is he's searching for, as he looks around desperately after Peyton's taken from his arms by a SWAT team member, till he meets Brooke's eyes over the top of his mom's head; her eyes say thank god you're okay, and he knows that same message is reflected in his own.
#35: Fever
Brooke works feverishly on coming up with a design for Karen's wedding gown, long after Keith's funeral is over, till Lucas rests his hands on her shoulders and gently tells her to keep it for herself ("it's okay, Brooke; it's not your fault").
#39: Overwhelmed
The first time he'd kissed Peyton, he'd been overwhelmed by curiosity, the second time, attraction, the third, guilt, and the last, fear; she jokingly says that they never last because he's no Jake, but Lucas knows it's because she's not Brooke.
#19: Candle
Sometimes they sit on the couch, tea candles scattered across the coffee table, his arm around her shoulders, talking about life and loss, hoarding the little moments that his mom and Keith never got to have.
#36: Laugh
Lucas laughs when Brooke asks if he remembers the night she showed up in his car, fully naked, "As if any guy would ever forget."
#14: Music
On the night of their prom, Brooke tells Lucas that she refuses to dance with him unless their song comes on; luckily, he expected that one a long time ago, and his burned CD is sitting right at the top of Mouth's "special requests" pile.
#02: Hero
Lucas has a hero complex and a protective streak a mile wide, especially when it comes to Brooke, so sometimes he forgets that she doesn't need saving; after all, she's not Peyton.
#07: Wings
"When you said we were going away, I didn't think you meant anything like th--Oh my god, Lucas!" Brooke exclaims, as he leads her into the hotel room; suites like these are a dime a dozen in her lifestyle, but it's different (better), somehow, when she's not the one paying.
#06: Hurricane
Karen often thinks that Brooke, like a hurricane, is a force of nature: frivolous, often destructive, and occasionally lacking responsibility; and still, Karen likes her, because she's never seen anyone else make Lucas so happy.
#38: Forever
Part of Brooke wants Lucas to promise her 'forever', but the rest of her doesn't believe that that word holds up in real life.
#01: Ring
Lucas believes it, and he lets Brooke know by giving her his promise on bended knee: a diamond ring, and the start of the rest of their lives, together.
