I have a tank that is completely overrun with green and grey hairy algae. It's not very pretty but it is interesting.

yae, I find that my ancistrus only like to eat the brown algae. it is kinda neat working it into bottom covering.

yup had black hair algae like that in one tank. it covered a lot of the tank and things in it and made the fish look like they were in the most surreal landscape of fluffyness. Also have some of that right now that is ONLY growing on one ornament in a tank. on a dragon statue and it makes it look like it is breathing black fire cause of the water currents

I hate black algae but the black fire affect must have been neat.

it is. luckily i found that black hair algae is for crayfish like Sushi is for me. an irresistible buffet. i had to set up a small tank at one point just to be able to grow enough black hair algae for my old cray who was the size of a small lobster. watching him mow the lawn so to speak was hilarious to watch. such greedy little claws just shoveling everything into his maw.
