1, Speak Michael Malone's inability to speak derives almost entirely from his inability to accept that he might have something worthwhile to say.
2. Touch Michael longs for the sensation of touch, to be contacted even in a casual way.
3. Memory The memory of his mother leaving continually haunts Michael, and makes him feel fourteen and awkward all over again.
4. Vanilla Michael believes if he were an ice cream flavor, he'd be boring, plain vanilla.
5. Chocolate Every valentine's day, Michael buys himself a large box of assorted chocolates and eats them very systematically according to the chart at the top of the box.
6. Ways and Means The ways of the world are mysteries to Michael Malone, and he hasn't yet developed the means to cope.
7. Belief - Michael's belief in God was never strong, until the day he met Jenny.
8. Linger - The peaceful smile on his father's face as he lingered on the edge of death perplexed Michael greatly.
9.Illuminance - The inconsistent illuminance of candlelight warming Jenny's pale face was the most beautiful sight Michael had ever seen.
10. Ornament - Michael thought the glass nutcracker ornament that had been his grandmother's to be quite creepy, and thus he was relieved when it finally broke one Christmas.

23. Bribe- Even though he knew it wouldn't work, Michael tried to bribe God into giving his father more time by going to church three times in two weeks.
24. Error - Michael realized the error in his plan to confront Jenny's boyfriend, right about the time the fist connected to his jaw.
25. Appetite- Thanksgiving always makes Michael lose his appetite - family holidays are always the most difficult times.
26. Refrain - When he doesn't want to think about things, Michael mentally plays the refrains to his favorite songs on repeat.
27. Family - A lot of Michael's problems started with the dissolution of his family when he was fourteen.
28. Grieve - Michael tries not to grieve externally, because he's learned that tears are an unforgivable weakness.
