I can't be the only person whose mind leapt straight into the gutter at the comparison of the twinkies' iceblock (NZ!) licking styles.

it turns out that Lois's mum thinks red food colouring is bad for you. Um, ok. Can anyone confirm this?

At first I thought this was consistent because it says in another book that her mum is a dietitian, but reading further it was probably a coincidence. Also, the "no red colouring" thing makes me think of Becca in Daddy Day Care.

Sorry Jess. There will come a time when every guy you look at dies. Sorry, no. Only the gorgeous ones, who you fall in love with & who fall in love with you & who you are destined to be with forever. Ok yeah, so all of them.

I love you.

a weird subplot about Amy having found a random bird in her backyard the week before. She & her parents stuffed it in a cage & have been trying to feed it seeds & now the she seems sick.I was so sure that this was going to be like those plots in the Babysitters Club where they have a mirroring subplot with the kids that teaches the Club ( ... )

Lois' mother's concern reflects the age of the ghostie?

Once upon a time red food dye was really bad for you - have no idea what they put in it, but in my very early childhood (1979 - early 80s in both USA and Australia) you could only get dark purply-red lollies/ candies. Then suddenly in about '85, when I suppose they found a new recipe, there were all these advertisements for real scarlet coloured foods: the theme was kind of 'they probably won't kill you now, kids!' This made a fairly big impression on me at the age of 5 or 6, with a vogue for 'strawberry' and 'cherry' flavoured food-type substances within my immediate social set. Some mothers wouldn't let you eat them, although by the time my brother was born ('87) it wasn't a big issue.

Apologies for over-analysis of SVK.

I remember it being a big issue in the early 90s. We weren't allowed red dye because we'd go fucking hyper on it. Like off the walls crazy. That's why most kids I know weren't allowed it, not because of health. Because our parents didn't want to deal with us more than any other reason.

I know people who are allergic to red dye used in some foods.

When I was reading this, my neice looked at the book cover and said the twins look like Barbie dolls. It was not a compliment.
