Sweet Valley Kids #75: Little Drummer Girls

Nov 17, 2008 11:12

First of all, when I found this book (and one other, which I intend to recap soon),I was actually looking for a Sweet Valley Twins (?) book which I know must exist and which I didn't hallucinate, but which I've been completely unable to track down. Please, if any of you remember the existence of Lila's 'Octopus-Head' perm, please reassure me that I ( Read more... )

Oh, you're absolutely right! I remember that one mainly for the plot about Jessica's wishes about Elizabeth and her lying, and I'd entirely forgotten about the actual Janet/Denny thing.

yes it totally is Jessica's No Angel. and lila's octopus head comes in when she tries to perm her hair to get bruce to ask her to the middle school picnic, but jess lies and says its gorgeous so bruce would not ask lila. cos whoever gets a date last was going to have to accompany a grumpy janet howell to the picnic.

and i'm kinda ashamed that i remembered the whole plot without having to google anything. right down to the i'm a liar t-shirt the unicorns made but never collected and chrome dome eventually got for a dollar and wore to the picnic. woe be me

An elementary school with a marching band? Has anyone actually heard of this before?

Below that is a four-leaf clover with the promise of "Fun Activities Inside!".
Hey, fun fact - in the Unicorn Club series, whenever there's a book from Jessica's POV with her signature on the back, she follows it with a four-leaf clover. Nostalgia for her days as a leprechaun band nerd?

I hurried forward and banged harder and faster, harder and faster
*Has sick thoughts* =P

Jessica, rather than just swapping back and accepting the solo as good enough to be the 'star' when she's clearly at least alright at the recorder and terrible at the drums, decides that this is proof that her twin will always outshine her at every turn.
Man, twinlife = confusing...

And, that's the end. It turns out, Jessica can't play the drum for the life of her, but is some kind of recorder prodigyOh my god! I just noticed a massive inconsistency. Believe it or not, in the SVH book 'Jessica's Secret Diary Vol II' (see about halfway down http://community.livejournal.com/1bruce1/11720.html) , Jessica ( ... )

I'm suspecting that's why they call it a 'flutophone' in the book - that sounds a little bit less dumb than a recorder.

On the other hand, apparently it's not even spelt right in the book, and other students are playing wood blocks, so they're hardly trying to be spectacular about the instruments.

As for that inconsistency - kudos for noticing that! Now that you mention it, I do recall that plot point. Presumably she forgot how to play "flutophone" in the intervening years.

That night, Jessica dreams about being a famous musician

She does that a lot, doesn't she?

I can think of at least half a dozen books in which Jessica dreams about being famous in some capacity without even trying, yeah, and I'm fairly sure at least three of those involve music/dance.
