This is my first ever post! I'm rather excited. Somehow I managed to post this without my comment. Anyhow, I thought I'd explain if no one else has - in American football teams have two uniforms, one with a white jersey that's worn at away games and one with a colored jersey that's worn at home games. I don't know at my school that would have been something a girlfriend did not just a random friend.

Thanks for the explanation! In the book the girl was totally chatting him up and flirting and it was made to seem as if she did this quite often, and that Jeremy promised his jumper to her to shut her up, so I guess that makes sense with your theory of "gilfriends not friends" :P
