SVT#32: Jessica on Stage

Jul 19, 2008 13:01

I know I said I was going to do SVT: Jessica and the Earthquake and I will, but when I recieved the books from the 'Bay I'd been waiting for, I re-read this one first and was instantly transported back to childhood. I loved this book! Which makes it kind of sad that, reading it now, all I want to do is snark at it.

But...wouldn't a kitten cause a lot of trouble? Maybe not as much as a puppy, but still. Those cutesy names are awful. I never would name a cat a cutesy name. I'd throw up every time I had to take it to the vet. Especially if it were sixteen and still had a cutesy kittenish name.

Also I love black and white movies. They're much better and better acted than the tripe today. But a lot of people born after that era seem to hate them.

At the vet I take my dog to, they call out his name then mine - so the kitten would be, in theory, Sweetie Pie Wakefield, and then Liz would have to stand up...and I thought it was embarrassing being called Ben, lol!

My friend has just got a new kitten, and she doesn't cause much trouble; at least cats don't need regular walks and slobber everywhere, unlike my pooch! I want a male puppy calld Rory :-)! But I'm settling for a rabbit instead. One big choc lab is enough.

I can't watch black and white movies; i think it's because they flicker and give me headaches. But, each to their own.

Yeah, it does depend on the cat. I had a kitten who was well-behaved, then years later got a cat who was nine or ten months old and he caused more trouble than the other two cats combined. It's just that this kitten seemed to be a troublemaker, hence her name.

But they don't need training! Throw food, water, and a litterbox at them and they're fine.

Yeah I suppose Mischief is a descriptive name if nothing else.

I have a two month old kitten named Rascal and he's absolutely insane, but at the same time he's the most affectionate animal I ever had.

I want a big dog called Back-up. I think that the best dog name EVER!

I loved this book as a kid too.

That's a cool dog name! My dog's called Ben, bit run of the mill but I didn't name him.

My copy of this book says the next book is called "The Wakefields' Visitor". I can't figure out why they changed it to "Elizabeth's New Hero". I mean, the first name is really boring, but the second makes no sense. They both suck.
Weird.

Great recap though!! :D

Oh right, I didn't know that some of the books had two names? Do you know of any others like that?

That's the only one I know of that actually changed the name of the book after the book previous had advertised it. But I know some BSC books advertise a book that doesn't exist.BSC #35 was originally called Stacey and the New Kids on the Block. I have no idea if that's reference to the band! lol

Stacey and the New Kids on the Block
Hahaha! Maybe the NKOTB, desperately scanning pop culture for any references of them, got wind of this and threatened legal action if their name was sullied in this manner.

Isn't Jess allergic to cats? Or is she? I get lost with whether she is or not.

Well in the SVH book where they go to Malibu as mothers helpers for the summer, its mentioned that Jess had had allergy tests done ( she was insisting she was allergic to dish washing liquid!) and the results were that she wasn't allergic to anything. It came up because Jess was trying to get Liz to swap jobs with her by saying she was allergic to her families cat.

Aha, thank you, I knew I'd read it somewhere but I couldn't remember where, or why.

Jessica may not be allergic to cats, but both Steven and Ned are. It was in the Sweet Valley Kids book, Jessica's Cat Trick. I've got that one and will be recapping it soon. I suppose Ned and Steven have miraculously recovered from their allergies in deference to the book's plot? ;)

Fun recap! :)

A bit off-topic from this direct snark, but the East German boy's gymnastics team?! Holy crap, do I feel old reading that! I'm definitely gonna have to check out Elizabeth's New Hero now.

It was printed in 1990 though, so it was already outdated by the time it was published. So we're not that old...?
