Sweet Valley High #50: Out of Reach

You'll remember I did a recap of SVH Senior Year “So Not Me” awhile ago. That book heavily features a Chinese girl named Jade Wu. This book also features a Jade Wu, except she's nothing like the Jade Wu of Senior Year fame. I can think of two reasons for this ( Read more... )

Bwah, very funny recap.

The whole make Ned feel bad for being old was in Jess' diary. She decided that she would use reverse psychology to make her dad want to be old and not young. All ghostwriters love reverse psychology, Stacey always used it in the BSC and the BSCers thought she was like soooo smart because of it.

Thanks! What confused me was that she was so scared he'd start doing "young" things that in order to stop this from happening she forced him to do "young" things? I was like, I don't get it! How's it less embarrassing that way? But then I realized I should really stop trying to figure out Jessica logic. It'll just hurt my brain.

Emily, will you marry me? Forget my husband, we can run away to Canada and wear down parkas all the time, and you can just recap things out loud to me all day long. I'm down on one knee, here.

Oh, racist Amy, you really are a bitch >:-<

Dr. Wu comes home ranting about how Jade must marry and Asian boy and should have only Asian friends.
Well, maybe she could've done that if they hadn't stuck her in a whitey school with a few token ethnics.

It's not like they murder people or something.
*searches brain for memories of Vicki Hendricks' Miami Purity*

She tells Jade she's not going to try to convince her father to let her dance if she keeps acting like a little shit.
Now that's some ace parenting! (Wakefields, take note.)

So, for some reason I can't quite figure out, she decides she's going to take him to the Beach Disco?
Should we feel stupid for not being able to figure out stupid Jess's stupid plan?

Ned thinks the music sucks, and in all likelihood, it does.
Exactly. Dads like classic rock. Jess likes old guys like Andrea Slade's dad.

Thanks for the recap, and have a lovely day! :-)

Even her father liked the dance (of course) and he says the white people might not be so bad, since they clapped for her so nicely (what?).

He actually said that outloud? AWKWARD!

Because all other white kids are total layabouts!

In Dr. Wu's defense, this is totally true of Sweet Valley.

Also, WTF racist!SoCal. Not that the racism isn't realistic, but having a single, token Asian character? In Southern California? What, did Sweet Valley bar the gates against the Japanese-American population after they were finally released from the internment camps? (Wait. Sweet Valley probably *was* an internment camp.)

Are there any Latino characters at all in this world? (If there are, though, I'm sure they're gardeners. ugh.)

Awesome recap, though!

I can't think of a Latino in regular SVH. But Tia Ramirez was in Senior Year. Those don't really count though.

Wasn't the race thing an issue with Annie Whitman's boyfriend? Manuel?

Annie Whitman was together with Ricky Capaldo, which I suppose is Latino, but the race issue was when Sandra Bacon dated Manuel Lopez, against her parents will.
