Sweet Valley High # 87: My Best Friend’s Boyfriend
I would say that some ghostwriter saw The Truth About Cats and Dogs and got inspired, but this book came out four years before that movie. Must just be a coincidence, then.
You know, for a long time I've been interested by this book's title, since it kinda-sorta describes a story I'm currently working on. And then you recapped it. Sigh ... sometimes I think I can be almost as dense as Liz.
OMG! This totally explains why I have an irrational love for Cats and Dogs even though I hate Uma Thurman! It all makes sense now. It's Sweet Valley love!
I’ll make it easy for you, John. RAPE SCARES WOMEN. Tattoo it on your arm so you don’t forget. Dude. Yes. Just yes.
The Mr. Collins plot is awesome. Seriously. Everything about it is awesome. I love that Mr. Cooper is more concerned about Mr. Collins's feelings than the good of the study body. (Does Cooper have a crush on Mr. Collins If You're Nasty? I say yes. He's jealous of Liz because Collins pervs on her. That's why he throws such a shit fit about this.
“Most kids at this school don’t even know what Constitutional rights are, but you were prepared to defend yours.” hahaha. Truer words never spoken.
To be fair, being falsely accused of sexual harassment is a hell of a thing for a teacher, and I can understand Mr Collins being jumpy about it, especially as he really didn't molest Suzanne. To be mean, it was hilarious how shifty and cover-uppy he was.
I especially like how, not only does Elizabeth make it all about herself, the ghostwriter does too. Who WAS sexually harassed? Is it important? Maybe it's okay because Amy gave Harassed Girl some helpful advice and she was able to do something about the problem off-screen (like slamming Mr Collins' nuts in a drawer and telling him her dad's in the Mafia), but dang, it was a problem of sufficient magnitude to kill Jessica and Amy's shopping buzz and they never followed it up? That's weird.
Amy apparently referred the girl to a rape crisis center or something. It was mentioned offhand in a conversation between Liz and Ginny that the referral would be standard Project Youth procedure if a caller had a sexual harassment problem. So anticlimactic.
I'm just impressed that Jessica didn't respond with, "Well, was the teacher hot?" when Amy told her.
This one seems to be impressively free of Jessica Wakefield, sociopath extraordinaire! Of course, with Elizabeth Wakefield, Queen of the Narcisstic Personality Disorder, running around...I guess someone has to be the sane one.

Hee! When Jess tells Liz, Liz is like, "That would be so horrible! You'd never know if you were getting good grades because your work was outstanding or because the teacher thought you were hot!" Todd and Jess are like, "Um...that's not really the biggest problem, Liz. She's a kid being SEXUALLY HARASSED by an authority figure!"

I say, based on our Liz the bard poll, that Mr. Collins just gives her good grades because he wants to tap that. It's the only explanation.
