Lila is dressed as Princess Di

And Liz had to ask who she was supposed to be. Really, it was not that difficult, unless Lila's costume was way off the mark. At that time, all you needed to be Diana was a blonde wig, a polka-dot dress, and a big hat. (Nowadays, the costume is a bit more complex..."

Jeffrey is a wino

For real? I don't remember that!

Winston is a bunch of grapes (he wins most creative costume).

Right, he was wearing balloons, and someone started popping them. Liz said, "I hope he's wearing something under his grapes!" and everyone else was probably hoping that too.

they're going as the See-No-Evil, Hear-No-Evil, Speak-No-Evil monkeys

OMG. I totally remember this! In fact, that book is where I learned about those monkeys.

Which makes me totally sad.

What is UP with all of the crazy wanna-be rapists running around SV? Seriously.

Well, all kidding aside, I will give props to SV for having sexual assaults committed/attempted by someone the victim knows. In earlier eras of YA fiction, the wannabe or successful rapist was generally the mythical guy who jumps out of a dark alley. And if a known guy said "Let's do it," he always took no for an answer. People were first hearing about acquaintance rape in the '80s, and I can't be too rough on SV for it.

That's a fair point. I do give them props for that, but my real problem is that the threat of rape is so overused as a plot device that it's rarely treated as seriously as it should be. (Except in a few rare cases where the victims are seriously traumatized by it.)

Well, yeah! That's the other side of the coin: males are either rapacious horndogs, or they have no genitals. No middle ground, and certainly no working things out with a partner. Virgin or whore, rapist or eunuch.

Hey. I loved this book. My favorite scene was Ned and Alice in his study talking about Kelly's upcoming visit after Alice got off the phone with Laura. This was about ten books before Alice and Ned start having problems. The repressed memory was triggered at miller's point.
