I bought mine today, two copies of each (one for display, one for reading) from two different bookstores. Two days after the release, Borders still hadn't brought them out from the back. This was unacceptable, for real. I channeled Jessica & flirted with the dude who brought me the books from the back, and he made a cute display for them when I told him they were my childhood (and adult-haha) obsessions.
I read them side by side, and the books are way different while still retaining that SV charm. I'm just excited about the return of the Sweet Valley World. I can't wait for the next books. Power Play is in my top five favorite SVH books! I can't wait until they republish "Wrong Kind of Girl."
I went to Borders tonight but they were closed by the time I got there. Barnes and Noble didn't have them out. I suspect I'll have to buy mine from Amazon online. You can already buy used copies for about $3 each. I'm curious to see all these changes...but nothing will beat the originals because those are the ones I grew up with.
I just read the excerpts and I don't think I can read the entire book. It just isn't going to be the Sweet Valley I grew up with. No 1bruce1 and no Dairi Burger really bugs me. Yes, I'm a nerd but don't mess with Sweet Valley.
I'm with you, carrie. It could be any stupid YA series.
The only thing I was happy about, upon reading the Double Love excerpt, was that they cleared up the "That was an awesome dunk shot you made in practice today, Todd!" comment of Jessica's, which was so stupid because they were getting ready for school, and even if the basketball team had had morning practices, you KNOW sweet Jess wouldn't've hauled her cookies out of bed early, Hot Boy or no Hot Boy.

I think this is what really bugs me about it - it's so... vapid. I get easily grumpy about YA series being all American!teen!girl!leikomg anyway, but at least Sweet Valley was crazy and had its own little worldview ^^
And it's not like Sweet Valley High wasn't vapid, but it was...I dunno...it's just that, do you think people who come fresh to this series will still be fans enough to snark on them fifteen years later?
The sorority was so confusing to me. After reading Power Play I was really upset that my local HS did not have a sorority -- I thought it was something that all truly glamorous and sophisticated high schools had.
OTOH, I was in the 5th grade so the point was probably moot.
Agree! Updates so wrong!miss_swartzApril 10 2008, 20:31:52 UTC
Just read the excerpts (have no idea when/if they bring these out in Australia) - so, so wrong. Never thought I'd proclaim myself an SVH purist, but updates try waaaaay too hard to convince us this is NOT 1983. I thought they'd just give Liz a laptop instead of a typewriter etc, but the changed dialogue is idiotic. Who speaks in slang every time they open their mouths? Also, a lot of it is already passe/ wrong for teenagers. 'PowerPlay' was one my all time fave SVH too - beautification committee? Erm - whaaa? So stupid! I want Bruce to call Robin the QM2 and dump her in front of the school. Give me real (unreal) SVH plot devices/dialogue.
I just read the chapter exerpt on amazon and... that's so bad! I just can't picture the twins talking like that. "You suck" does not sound right coming out of Jessica's mouth!
That was how I felt when I read the last Senior Year book, when the twins graduate. I'd never read a Senior Year book before that. I never imagined I'd hear slang coming out of Liz's mouth - you don't even really hear her using it in SVU. In that respect, it's kind of weird....I'll have to see how the whole book goes.

Of course my school didn't have a Beautification Committee either. So we must have been all around lame.
