Open Poll: why is your city better than mine?

What is the difference between one town and the next? My friend William pointed out that there is not really much difference between one city and the next, you have the same shops, the same stores, the same TV shows, the same interstates, and the same houses… literally, the same five floor plans copied all across the United States. What is the ( Read more... )

I can speak to Cambridge and Minneapolis and they're nothing alike. I mean, you can find some of the same stores and stuff, but when it comes to attitude and layout and everything, they're so different. Cambridge is way more uptight, very busy, always bustling. Minneapolis is way more laid back. So I think it's all about what you need in city. Some things are the same, but the heart and soul of the city is always different.

Ok... So, what I am gathering is that its uh, the people. The heart and sould of a city is different in that the buildings and layout are different, but also the way the people interact with each other is different. I have been talking to a lot of people about my recent observation, especially on those who have lived in many different places. Culture can change as easy as a zip code, but what are some things in addition to the people that one would look for when mooving to a new city?

For me, what I like about the Omaha Community is the Activites that they have for free, there is a great community center. Community bulding activities like Jazz and Shakespeare on the green. Parks and such. Omaha is one of the worst places I have lived as far as recycling.

What I might look for in a new city is a community center, city planning that allows for two wheeled people powered transportation. Every thing else is solely dependant on the people.

My city has public beaches with beautiful women in bikinis all year round.

My city has a great bus system that actually runs rather frequently.

My city has interstates that don't go interstate ;).

The people here believe in the spirit of Aloha and welcoming outsiders.

We have recycling centers at almost every public school open to the community to recycle aluminum, paper, plastic, and glass.

We never have to shovel our cars out of the snow. We don't need to own any winter clothing.

People can go do water sports all year round.

Living on an island, people have a concious awareness of the environment and what it means to be a part of it all. Eventually it all comes back around. There's no such place as "away" to throw things. It ends up in our own back yards sooner or later.

BTW- Omaha is a city and Arizon is a state.

I like your responses. Thanks! as you know, but maybe others don't, Interstates receive federal funding while other roads have to be paid for by the cities, states, counties, or neighborhoods, that use them. That is why Douglas County charges a wheel tax to people who live in Omaha--so that the people with the most roads pay more than the rest of the people in Douglas county... That's why Hawaii has Interstates, so they can have federal funding for their highways, even thoough the dont connect between states, or, at least I don't think, between islands. are there any bridges that connect the islands?

BTW - My City state confusion when I type about Arizona comes from the fact that I have lived many cities in Arizona and if I where to move back I wouldn't care which city I moved back to. But that is a good observation, Arizona is a state. :)
