Obligatory Avacasting Racism Post

Jun 10, 2009 20:27

Everyone who's anyone in the fandom has one of these, and considering I sent a protest letter in the mail, I have to agree with them.

For those of you who don't know, Avatar is the following:

1. The best animated television series since sliced bread.
2. Set in a world that's really, really Asian.

cut for the text of the letter I sent to the producers )

avatar: the last airbender, catholic pride

The thing with Twilight is that all of the characters were white, pretty much, so you can't call the filmmakers racist. But hey, at least Twilight tried to portray characters as the race they explicitly were. That kid who plays Jacob is... part... Native American. It could be much worse. For instance, a character who explicitly has brown skin that you can see with your own two eyes might be portrayed by a white actress! Oh, wait. She is.

And this is a call for even non-ATLA fans to write their Aang Ain't White letters.

(there's a movie in works?)

>the Water Tribe is strongly based off of Inuit culture
That makes a lot of sense...

Is it really that hard to find actors of various ethnical diversities? GAH! *bashes TV*

>> I never realized that Katara and Sokka did not have darker skin than other characters because they were South Asian as opposed to East Asian, but because they were actually Native American.

You mean they DO have darker skin?

Oh I just re-read it and I figure the way you've structured your sentence makes it a bit ambiguous. You mean "they have darker skin not because they're south asian but because they're native american"
Hehe all cleared up =)
