Everything is...as well as can be expected, I suppose.

Thank you. Really. I'm not sure what there is to talk about, though.

Petronilla. I try and do everyday things with her. I had her help me paint once. She's...a liar, but she's had terrible things happen to her, so I have to balance that out.

This pregnancy she has? It's false. It's called pseudocyesis, but it also means that she is honestly convinced that it's real.

[A pause.] Also know that I'm telling you this in confidence because you're as much involved with her progress as I am for the moment. So I trust you to keep it quiet.

Yes, certainly, but won't she realize...I mean, when there isn't any baby?

She will, yes. And we'll have to cross that when it happens.

I suspect she'll be quite sad.

I know she will be. I thought that...by being a bit harsh with her at first, by trying to show her that she wasn't pregnant to begin with would help stop it before it...turned into this.

I was wrong. Now I still try and convince her, but I have to be mindful of the fact that she honestly thinks she's pregnant and...there are risks associated with that.

She will be sad. But I intend to be there for her when it happens.

Thank you, Constable. You can just call me Svetlana, if you want.

And...I have been a warden for a long time now. I do know how to help an inmate.

[Pause.]

I'm sorry. That came out harsher than I wanted it to.

I don't think it was harsh at all: you certainly seem as though you do. What is it you do back home?

It's not my home anymore. But...I was a doctor. And...a Night Watch agent. Those...powers I have? They're meant to help humans.

I can see how they'd come in handy. It'd be a whole lot easier to chase down a thief who couldn't keep his shoes tied.

Well, it doesn't really work like that. I don't and really can't use my powers like that. The curse is...a very bad thing.

I do still have a bit of a mark on my head.

Oh, I hadn't meant it like that.

I just meant: yes, it does seem like a great responsibility.

It is. And it's one that I didn't have to be worried about for a while.

But...that's over.
