Oh, hee. ♥ I love that you expanded this part of the story, and told it from a completely different point of view. :)

Gene had been up to his ears in Nelson's finest for hours.

Had this been a different story, this line would have meant something completely different. XDDDD

The good copper bit, not the tight arsed bit, because, really, how would Gene know that?

I chuckled a good long while at this line. :D

"Want," Sam said, laying a hand alongside Gene's cheek and Gene could feel him shifting his whole body down to Gene's level at the same time. "Want to -"

Gene cut Sam off with a kiss. Not a brilliant kiss. Not the sort that blazes fire up and down your spine. Just a kiss, a press of whiskey flavoured lips to whiskey flavoured lips, chaste and wholesome. But so much more than that and everything Gene thought Sam might want to say and he might want to say back.

You know, I love this whole exchange. Love that it's not a perfect kiss, that it's drunken and fumbling and yet sweet and perfect (for the moment) all the same.

Enjoyed this as a fic by itself but I love the way it works with the original as well. I especially liked the last line, very memorable and moving.
