There's not much going on today, so we might as well hop on one of those little minor league buses and take a look at the prospects again. There are one or two things worth highlighting today:
I mentioned it yesterday, but there was an
audio interview on Baseball Prospectus Radio featuring Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson which I added a link to in my last post as an afterthought. You can download it to listen to it (I went so far as to put it on my iPod so I could hear it again and again because, as I've mentioned many times here, I am totally obsessed with Jed Lowrie). The catch? They interviewed one another instead of fielding questions from a reporter. They're both very articulate; in fact, Justin Masterson also has an excellent deadpan delivery which he unleashes on Jed several times throughout the interview session (Jed seems pretty easily amused, which I like - you know my past track record with people who lack deadpans). A number of things come up, including Johan Santana, the quality of the players in the Red Sox organization, Jed's alma mater (Stanford), and Justin's shaved head. Oh, and this:
Justin: Now you're a strong guy, you're maybe not the tallest, but you're definitely not the shortest, but the throw from short is a longways, and, I mean, you have a strong arm, but I don't know, I mean, are they gonna try to push you over to that second base, or are you just going to say, "You know what? I don't care, I have a cannon, and I'm just gonna stay at short?"
Jed: (modestly) Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't describe it as a cannon...I think you're giving me quite the -
Justin: A rocket launcher, maybe?
Jed: (cracks up) Yeah, we'll say that.
I think we need to keep these two. They're a great double act.
The other prospect news is
a little organizational write-up on MILB's website. Like most articles concerning the Sox prospects, it heaps accolades on Jacoby and Clayboy, but it also brings up a bunch of other prospects. If you want more Jed, there's an interview with him there from July, in which he mentions that he and Jacoby are very good friends and have known each other for a long time. They're both from Oregon, so a part of me wonders if college wasn't the first time they played against each other. It's a pretty big state compared to my home state (New Jersey), but most states have a state championship in high school sports, so it's very possible that they had an on-field encounter in high school. Jed points out that he and Jacoby have united due to the fact that the sport is "dominated" by Californians and Floridians - so even though he went to college in Arizona, Dustin had better watch his back.
Otherwise, that's pretty much it for now. I'm working on a write-up of the Pac-10's current influence on the Sox organization, which I promise will be illustrated, but for now it's nowhere near done. For now, there's plenty of prospect goods to go around!
