...and we wait a little longer...

Not funny, Josh. Not funny.

Eh, I suppose everyone is allowed a bad outing now and again. I'm not going to say that I can nail everything I do perfectly every single time simply because that's incredibly unrealistic. Therefore, I will not yell at Josh Beckett today. After all, twenty wins is nothing to laugh at or complain about. (I can also say that I was at the Sox-Phillies interleague play game where Josh hit a home run last year, which I have to admit was incredibly amusing.)

I have started to work on Londinium again as of late, but I have discovered one major problem. There is a part of me that is insisting I write Dustin Thatcher as Dustin Pedroia. My mind has continually been slipping between the two, making me say one of their last names when I am talking about the other one and such. I wonder if I'll still be like this after October...If I ever confuse them in an entry, I apologize to both the reader and to them. On that note, Pedroia's batting average currently stands at .318, which means he is ahead of Jim Viox with just three games left to play. Since I haven't quite figured out how cricket batting averages work yet (I'm still getting a handle on that game, keep in mind), I can't report Thatcher's batting average to you. Furthermore, he doesn't have an official average anyway because he's a pianist, not a cricketer.

He is an unstoppable force on my Wii when I play baseball, though. The first home run I ever hit outside of the actual stadium was smacked by Thatcher, by the way. Hmm. Speaking of the Wii, I know I linked to this the other day, but Pedroia has one, too. I am willing to bet that if he has WiiPlay, he managed to platinum the ping-pong the first day he had the game.

Well, another painfully long workweek is over. I just get hammered with assignments left and right nowadays, but when your midterms are coming up it's understandable. I am seriously looking forward to the weekend, although it's a little bittersweet because this is the last weekend of the regular season. There's only one month left of baseball for the year, and then I have to start worrying about our prospects again during the off-season. This year, I have to concern myself with the third base conundrum, as well (please, let's just resign Mike Lowell and forget about it!). It is also mandatory, given their performances, to keep Buchholz and Ellsbury, but we have other prospects to keep an eye on (Jed Lowrie, etc.) who are worth keeping.

One last note before I go: Jed Lowrie went to Stanford, making him yet another Pac-10 kid. He was drafted in 2005, which means that at some point in his college career he likely played against both Dustin and Jacoby. I am insanely amused by this.

EDIT: Clay has officially been shut down for the rest of the season. A part of me is disappointed, as this means he won't be on the postseason roster (where I personally think we may need him), but this tells me that it is highly likely that the Sox are planning on keeping him and won't be sending him anywhere. That puts me at ease.

EDIT 2: Matsuzaka went eight innings, and we won. We only used two pitchers, Matsuzaka and Papelbon. What fun we had saving our bullpen!
Pedroia average watch: .317. He went 1-for-4 tonight, leaving his average tied with Jim Viox's with two games left to play. Hang in there, Dustin.

EDIT 3: This is a bit eerie, but I was watching the Rockies-Diamondbacks game on Gameday and the Rockies put in a reliever named Taylor Buchholz. Although I don't think he and Clay are related (I wasn't able to dig anything up - does anyone know if they are or not?), there was one creepy similarity which I read about on Wikipedia: His first success came in his second major league appearance in what was almost a complete-game one-hit shutout against the Pittsburg Pirates. The first hit came when second baseman Eric Bruntlett double-clutched the ball before throwing, allowing runner Chris Duffy to reach first base safely. After Jack Wilson singled, Astros manager Phil Garner pulled Buchholz and brought in closer Brad Lidge, who struck out Jason Bay to end the game. Buchholz ended up going 8 2/3 innings and giving up only two hits.

Hahahahaha, our Buchholz is better! In all seriousness, though, there must be something with that name...hmm...Both of them did their respective deeds in their second major league starts, too, which is the incredibly disturbing part. I have a feeling this will eat at me for a very long time...

EDIT 4: BALTIMORE DID IT! With their tenth-inning win (a bases-loaded bunt by Melvin Mora), the Orioles have brought our magic number down to zero! We won the division!
