He doesn’t know her that long, just few months, and, if he has to be frank, he hates her at times. It’s not because she comes from a  rich family- Christine Addison-Stark isn’t just about money, doesn’t care about them even that much - and it’s not even because she is oh, so smart, and every day walking on the thin line between craziness and geniality.

Ok, maybe it’s because she is smart and because she is rich. But not simply because of that, it’s just… her general allure. She is smarter than everyone- probably the smarter in the room, at least in her department - and she knows better than everyone, and God help them, can she be wrong? No, of course not. She is Christine Stark- The Blackdragon - after all. She knows everything, and she is  perfect, with the husband and the money and the mind. He wonders, sometimes, when she’ll get the 2.3 average kids and the picket fence…

It’s frustrating and infuriating- she is frustrating and infuriating, and yes, he hates at times - at times, but not right now.

The news has just been broadcasted, and the message has reached every telepathic mind on the planet, Chris included: Onslaught has fallen, but with him, many heroes have died as well, and between them, Iron Man, the armored avenger.  The whole world is crying them right now, the man behind the mask and all his team-mates and friends, but for Chris is more than just that. Because there Was a man behind the mask, a man called Antony Stark, and while the world is crying an hero, she is crying a brother-her sole family.

Right now, it’s like he knows her. He knows her because he has been through that pain, he knows her because he remembers an afternoon, of many years before, when a police officer called him to deliver the news that his mother was dead, had been killed, murdered by a maniac.

It doesn’t matter that Tony knew the risks, knew that he was living a dangerous life. It doesn’t even matter that she wasn’t supposed to know about his double identity. It doesn’t matter, because for the ones surviving, the pain is just the same, an hole inside the heart- the soul, like Kurt would call it - that will never, ever cease to exist, an ever-lasting shadow, sometimes bigger and more painful, and sometimes smaller, barely noticeable, but still there.

He looks at her, really looks at her, probably for the first time since they met, and, for the first time, his heart aches for her, for this woman curled in fetal position in a corner of her bathroom, crying her heart out.

He thought she was cold, but she isn’t.

He studies her from afar, clenching and unclenching his fists at his side , trying to take the next step, to join Kurt and Rachel and Kitty. He tries, but he doesn’t, because as much as he’d like to go to that little woman, taker her in his arms and allow her to cry herself to sleep while murmuring sweet nothing and telling everything will be all right,  he knows he can’t. It’s not just because he isn’t allowed to - they aren’t even friends, barely team-mates, and she has a bloody husband who should be at her side doing those things for her- it’s just that, despite being a spy, he hates telling lies, and telling her everything will be all right, right now it would be a lie.

He doesn’t do all those things for her because nothing will ever be all right. That hole in her heart will be ever-lasting, and there will not a be a single day she’ll not spend regretting the things she did, the choices she made and the words she said.

Her house of cards just collapsed, and nothing after that will ever be the same. He knows it because he has been there, because he is there. It’s the place he is living in from over 10 years of his life, his personal hell.

And now, hers as well.
