Brava. My mother worked as a charge nurse for almost 30 years, until this past October when she became the director of infection control. She worked her ass off, missed holidays and birthdays, because she feels the way you did: nursing is a calling, not simply a job ( ... )

Seriously, I'm saving this to assign to my feminist theory class.

(I'll admit, as a patient, to difficulty distinguishing RNs from nurses' aides...but that strikes me as relatively minor, and not something requiring massive regulation.)

The nurses at my Uni's hospital (in Germany) all wear white scrubs. Those are supplied and washed by the hospital as far as I know (blue and green scrubs are). And housekeeping wears mint green tops. Also in white are those who shuttle paitients around the hospital, except those who are from the fire department, who wear a blue uniform that says so. Most doctors wear white coats (with whatever, or some with white pants and shirt) and some blue scrubs (that were meant for the intensive care units). So, you're righ in that doctors (and med students) have the most freedom in dressing themselves. (But as far as I know, they're also the only ones doing their own laundry ( ... )
