I did a set of Middleman recs, speaking of TV shows that do a pretty excellent job of inspiring fantasies. ♥

This is a very interesting, thoughtful post. I don't watch Glee, but it's good to know that there is at least some positive, focused representation of big women of color in popular media, especially for a younger audience. I also like that it seems to be a show that is not mostly black, but has a truly diverse cast.

I'll definitely check out your links, too. The Crunk Feminist Collective sounds amazing.

Thank you ♥

Thanks! Glee has a huge amount of sociopolitical fail, but it also has these little moments of progress that give me hope.

And the Crunk Feminist Collective is amazing. In the middle of last year they had an article on Kreayshawn and how some women in hip hop actually perpetuate misogyny against black women and are rewarded for it, and I was just like, "Yes! Someone actually gets it."

I'm glad the show is getting this thing right. I hope it will be a harbinger of more and more to come.

I feel like, even if they screw this up, and even if we don't see anything else like it for years, my girls can look back on their adolescence and remember that they used to watch a teen TV show that managed to take a black woman seriously for once. Because in my Buffy/Dawson's Creek/90210-watching days, the only thing I remember even attempting it is Boy Meets World, and that meant so much to me then. Hopefully it won't be another 12 years before it happens again.
