More thoughts on Libya.

You know who is coming off REALLY terribly in this situation (aside from the obvious)?

Italy.

Unfortunately, Italy is run by a truly miserable example of humanity, so appealing to his sense of shame will probably not succeed.

What's Berlusconi done now?

My friend is from Italy -- he only became an American citizen last year -- and he hates Berlusconi. Absolutely hates, hates, hates. So if Berlusconi is backing Gaddafi, I expect my friend won't be surprised.

I saw a reference yesterday to Italy backing Ghadaffi yesterday, although I didn't read it too thoroughly, so I am hesitant to comment too much on that. But then I heard commentators on NPR talk about how Italy is actually paying Ghadaffi (not Libya, Ghadaffi personally) to prevent all of the African refugees in Libya from going to Italy. So the combination makes me :/ (Although it's not as bad as what Daniel Ortega said.)

Also, I hate Berlusconi. He is a complete shithead and it reflects unbelievably poorly on the Italian electorate that they keep reelecting him.

Woooooow. If that's true, that's a pretty shitty thing to do. I'm not surprised. There seems to be a lot of tension over immigration in Italy, particularly in regards to immigrants from North Africa. But seriously?! Paying Gaddafi directly?

Reminds me - I was looking at a map of all the countries where Gaddafi has bought off support. It's basically all the neighboring states except Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia. I guess you don't get to 40 years in power without buying off a lot of friends...

That's what someone on yesterday's Libya episode of the Diane Rehm Show said. Yeah. Awesome.
