My poll.

So, my poll on straight men's feeling about homosexuality has gone fairly well. You can see it here.I'm not sure how seriously you can take it, because while I have a total of 202 responses (which should be enough to give it some legitimacy), those responses are from men who post to a message board that leans overwhelmingly to the left. I find the results interesting. My experiences with straight men would lead me to think that #1 is more accurate. It may be because of the different demographics. I live in small town Iowa, and the number of gay men that open is very small. I have had many conversations with straight men about this and on a whole the are uncomfortable around gay men. I am not saying the the straight men that I know are homophobic, just not comfortable around them. My husband is very uncomfortable around gay men he doesn't know, but he has also had some very bad experiences with gay men growing up.

I think this is one of those issues that is wildly individual, and in order to produce any accurate statistical data there would have to be a million variables taken into account. IMO, I think the main factor in whether a straight man will feel uncomfortable around gay men is familiarity. In my experience, straight men who have a gay man in their lives (a friend, a family member, etc.) feel less or don't feel at all uncomfortable than they had or they thought they would before they figured out that it's just some dude (provided that the straight man in question isn't violently homophobic).

Oh, I know. The lack of subjectivity is something I was looking for, actually. It's sort of a poll about subjective impressions.
