She was on the bed again, tears running down her cheeks. Only this time she was thrashing. This time she could barely breathe. And this time, Cameron was already by her side, holding her against her chest as she brushed the hair out of her lovers frantic, yet somehow empty eyes. She wasn’t the one in pain, but she wished to be. She wished that she could take some of it away from her love - her Remy. She wished this all away.
In, out, in out. There was a longer, more terrifying pause between each regular breath. And both of them seemed to be aware of this. Even more aware, as Thirteen’s head almost jerked out of Cameron’s gentle grip. Even more aware as her arms came up and nearly hit them both. And then their eyes met - and as a blank stare met a gaze filled with love and agony and bittersweet care there could be no more denying it. Any of it. This was death.
This was death.
This was -
"Allison..."
Cameron let out a strangled gasp, and began to sob harder, "Rem, Rem it’s me. Oh God Remy. My Remy, My -
"Allison, where are you?"
She tried not to scream, tried not to cry out "I’m HERE, I’m RIGHT HERE! Why can’t you see me???!?!??!" And somehow, some greater power inside her prevented her from letting out anything but a strangled moan. But as Remy kept babbling in incoherency in between her ragged breaths and whimpers Cameron broke. As if it was ending. As if this was it. As if -
She cried against Remy’s shoulder with abandon, soaking the woman’s loose t-shirt. "I-I-I" Remy began, but it faded away with a jerk of the head and a cough.
Cameron let out a shaky breath. "I’m here, Remy. I’m here. I’m never gonna leave you. I’m never gonna leave."
But Remy was leaving her. Breath by breathe, she was leaving. In, out, in, out...in....
And suddenly Cameron was softly singing, remembering. Singing the verse that always spoke to them both the most,
When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these yearsBut you still have all of me, me, me
"Ally...Ally...Al- you’re back. Where’d, where’d you go??" Remy inquired with a barely audible whisper, shaking, grasping onto Cameron for dear life.
Cameron laughed, relieved and bitter and terrified and ecstatic, everything at once. She looked into her eyes and would swear she saw someone in there. Saw something.
"I never left Remy, I never left. I promised."
"Ally, I lo-
In, out, in out.
In...
Cameron let out a hysteria-filled sob.
"I love you too."
