Ahamo was pacing the hallway outside the Central City medical facility, waiting for word from anyone about his wife. She'd gone into labor with their first child a few hours before and it seemed that ever possible bad movie plot had come into play.

The temperature had dropped a few days prior and it had been snowing non-stop; the sudden freeze had disrupted most of the city's power. The trip from the palace to the Zone's version of a hospital had been slightly more eventful than he'd hoped, what with the bit of snow that had melted the day before having frozen over again after the suns went down.

His wife would have rather just stayed at the palace and had the baby there, but he had become a nervous wreck and didn't trust the idea of a home birth; not that he had much more trust in the doctors of the Zone. It wasn't that they were incompetent... Ahamo just saw the whole world as a step backward, technologically-speaking.

She'd assured him, however, that babies were born in the Zone every day without any troubles and, without hesitation, began seeing the medicos. The entire pregnancy went as expected, until the last two months. She was constantly nauseous and had to rest more often than even she’d like.

He was worried that something was wrong, but his wife assured him that it was simply because the baby wouldn't stop moving around and it was throwing off her balance. She was happy to know that the baby was healthy, of course, but would rather the child would just take a break now and then.

Ahamo pointed out that it simply meant the child - which he assumed was a boy - would be a star running back and go all the way to State, if not to a career in the pros. She gave him a loving nod and then informed him that, while she wasn't familiar with the term 'running back', she was fairly certain that "he" was a "she"; and, judging by the movements, was preparing for a career as a dancer.

As long as the baby was healthy, he finally admitted, Ahamo would be content if the kid never left the basement.

The opening of a door brought him back to the present. Ahamo glanced up to see a nurse moving across the room with a handful of papers, obviously not there to give him any information. It seemed that something had, in fact, gone wrong with the baby and everyone in the facility had been thrown into a panic.

The Queen had been rushed into a room and he'd been shoved into the hallway. Of course, his own father hadn't been present for his birth, as it just wasn't a place for the men to be... but he wasn't his father, nor was he on the Other Side. Something was wrong with his wife and his child and he didn't know what it was.

He wanted to call his mother.

Finally, after what seemed an eternity, the doors opened again and another nurse came out with an armful of what looked like rags and towels. She gave him a nod and held her arms out toward Ahamo. He stepped over and took the pile from her, hoping she'd give him some news about his wife.

The nurse gave him a look and shook her head, reaching back for the pile. "You're holding her all wrong," she snapped and grabbed his hand, shifting it to the left. "Sit down," she ordered with exasperation. Ahamo blinked and looked down at his hands.

There, in the middle of what wasn't actually towels or rags, but a blanket, was a tiny, pink baby.

Ahamo raised his head with a look of absolute confusion on his face and the nurse smiled, helping him sit in one of the chairs against the wall. "Congratulations, Highness," she said quietly, adjusting his hold again. Ahamo let out a half-laugh and stared down at the baby. As she stepped back, he looked up and opened his mouth.

"It's a girl," the woman responded.

The backstory: I was rather active, it seems, and managed to wrap the cord around myself a good many times, therefore making me a C-section and freaking my dad TFO. He called my grandmother (Mom's mom), who was outside of town at the house, in tears because they were "cutting her open" and he didn't know what to do; he says it was icy, she says it wasn't.
The towel bit is a direct quote from Mom... *facepalm*
Apparently, I'm supposed to ask him about it tomorrow to see how he tells it...
