Birds chirped and a light, warm breeze zipped through the tall grasses as DG moved across the field to the tree line. She'd managed to convince her guards that she would be fine in the open field and, unless someone was waiting in the woods and knew exactly where she was headed, she should be fairly safe.
She moved slowly, taking a few moments to enjoy the peace and quiet and think about how much it looked like Kansas. As she neared the trees, DG swept the horizon and spotted him, sitting on a fallen log just next to a large tree. Slowing her pace slightly, DG worked her way under the shade of the tall trees and stopped across from him, leaning against the tree trunk.
She knew he was aware of her presence, but she also knew better than to just run up to him. Waiting for him to acknowledge her, DG examined the tree bark and noticed a little ant climbing around. She heard a small grumble and looked up to see Raw looking at her with a frown.
She gave him a forced smile and pushed off the tree, taking a few steps across the glen to his side. Sitting down on his left side, DG looked at the view from her new seat and could see the guards off in the distance, going through a shift change. Raw's hand was on his knee and his leg was shaking slightly, so DG put her hand over his and, as his leg stilled, she pulled his hand into hers and squeezed.
Raw looked from their clasped hands up into the face of the younger princess. She said nothing, but was thinking good thoughts his way, which made him smile. They sat for a few moments in silence before Raw leaned over slightly to rest his head on DG's shoulder. She smiled and leaned her head toward him as well.
"Headaches aren't getting any better?" DG asked. She knew that the abundance of people in the vicinity of DG on a daily basis was overextending the Viewer's abilities to a point he could barely keep the voices under control.
"Raw tries," he said quietly. DG shifted to put an arm around him and sighed. She knew that Raw was staying for her, and she knew that it was killing him. She didn't want him to go, but she also knew he couldn't stay.
"Raw not leave DG." She pulled away slightly to look at him and gave him a smile.
"You'd be better off, Raw. I don't want you to put yourself in danger just so I can see you every day," she said with a smile.
"Raw not leave DG," he said again and DG nodded.
"And I won't leave you," she said with a shake of her head. "But," she started in a regal manner. "Just because you aren't here doesn’t mean you've left." Raw's brow furrowed and his head cocked to one side. "I just want you to be happy, Raw."
"Raw happy with DG and Glitch." DG nodded.
"Yes, but I'm worried about you," she said, running her hand along the side of his face. "Glitch is crazy enough for the four of us." Raw laughed slightly at the joke, still confused at how DG could consider Glitch as two people when he was only one man.
"Raw is strong for DG," he said a moment later. DG nodded, knowing she'd never win this argument. Raw learned that from Cain. Well, he also learned it from her, she realized. A moment later, she took a deep breath and put both hands on either side of Raw's face.
"You promise me... if it gets worse..." DG frowned and gave him a look of determination. Raw blinked twice and nodded.
"Raw promise DG."
