Monday's child is fair of face
DG never thought much of being a girl. Sure, she wore a dress at the Hilltop, but she was always much more comfortable in jeans. Now that she was a princess, however, part of her required routine included dresses.
She was worried, at first, because she’d only seen the dresses on her sister and the women in the Sin District. Her mother convinced her that she would not being wearing those dresses.
“But... I’ll look like a girl,” DG protested. Her mother laughed and put an arm around her younger daughter.
“You are a girl, my angel.” DG grumbled and they finally agreed that DG would wear the dresses, but she wouldn’t wear the makeup. At least not anything more that was absolutely necessary.
Tuesday's child is full of grace
DG’s lessons had moved along well. She was learning the history of the Zone, reconnecting with her magic and memorizing the names and positions of the delegates to the royal court. Her greatest test came during the first meeting with the public.
She stood in the Great Hall and met with each person who came through the line. Most of them praised her return to the Zone and thanked her for keeping the suns shining. She smiled to each of them and thanked them, really not feeling like she deserved the attention. After all, she wasn’t the only one in the tower during the eclipse.
It was the residents of the Zone who weren’t cheering her praises that DG made the point to speak with. She would rather hear their grievances, because she knew that they would be speaking honestly. Cain didn’t like that she was putting herself in the line of their wrath, but he trusted her judgment.
In the end, the skeptics were some of the most faithful to the family.
Wednesday's child is loving and giving
Azkadellia had good days and bad. DG would sit up with her at night and tell her stories of the wild nights in Kansas, usually culminating in DG being brought home by Gulch. Az would cry until she laughed and, while she was emotionally drained, would sleep through the night and be better in the morning.
DG wasn’t only dealing with her sister’s mood swings. Good days were Glitch days; bad days were Ambrose days. It took everything she had on Ambrose days... luckily she’d been trained by working at the Hilltop.
She pushed Cain and Jeb into situations where they would have to spend time together - both of them knew it, but played the fool to keep her happy - and she would check in on them to make sure they were getting along.
When it came to her parents, DG would offer to take over their duties so that they could spend time together - they’d been separated for fifteen years, after all. She would prepare the menu for dinner, help the house staff set up the guest rooms for visiting dignitaries and generally deal with the concerns of the people.
Thursday's child works hard for a living
DG was the first to volunteer when the request came from the fighters of the Eastern Guilds to rebuild their village. Glitch drew up plans to fortify the structures and strengthen the supports for the bridges between the trees.
Cain offered to chop wood when the little warriors were visibly disturbed by the sounds of the chainsaws. Jeb arrived later on with more Resistance members and they spent the day rebuilding the village, as well as their relations.
DG demanded to serve dinner to all of them, really doing nothing more than ladling out the stew, but it made her feel useful. Especially after both the Cain men told her that, as a princess of the Outer Zone, she should not be climbing trees or getting dirty.
She would have smacked them both, but she didn’t want to start a war.
Friday's child is full of woe
Raw always knew when DG was having an Ambrose day. He would wait until everyone else had stopped thinking so loud and he would work his way through the palace to DG’s quarters. They would sit together, the Viewer simply comforting DG as she cried herself to sleep.
He understood why she pushed so hard, but there was nothing more he could do. He knew DG was capable of taking care of herself, and he was rather honored that she confided in him - even if it was most likely because she couldn’t hide it from him.
The next morning, DG would be just as chipper as always and Raw would stand off to the side, reveling in the joy of a family reunited. He would never tell DG that Cain knew about her Ambrose days, as well. At times, he wondered if Cain knew that he was always fully aware of the former-Tin Man’s presence on the other side of the door.
Saturday's child has far to go
DG argued with her parents, her sister and her best friends until she was blue in the face. Well, she was actually more of a purplish-red, but that was beside the point. She didn’t care how much they said she was ready. She didn’t feel ready to rule a country or kingdom or whatever the proper term was for the Zone.
She hadn’t even seen the Inner Zone, so how could she rule the Outer?
Her mother promised that they were not going to simply hand over the reins and disappear to the Northern Island. But the Zone needed a leader. The people had accepted Azkadellia, mainly due to the constant vouching of DG, and the Queen wasn’t capable of leading them forward. The people loved DG; she loved the people.
She would be fine, whether she believed it or not.
But the child that is born on Sabbath-day Is bonny and happy and wise and gay
A year after she was crowned Queen of the Outer Zone, there was a party. It was a party the likes of which the Zone had never seen. Granted, it wasn’t quite Times Square on New Year’s Eve, as DG made it a point to tell everyone she saw.
But it was close.
DG tripped over her own gown twice, spilled wine on herself after Glitch took a tumble of his own - more to make him feel better - and managed to get a dance out of Wyatt Cain. Jeb Cain enjoyed himself, under threat from DG; and her parents simply sat back and watched the merriment.
The arrival of the Nurture Units from Milltown made the night complete.
DG watched as Glitch and Raw pondered a set of sparklers, Cain and Jeb spoke to Ahamo and Azkadellia was asked to dance by a young man in uniform. Catching her mother’s eye, they gave each other a nod.
Finally, DG knew where she belonged.
