Gem
“It’s just a rock, now,” Az said with a shrug. She tossed the emerald to DG and went back to sorting through the items on her dressing table.

DG rotated the little green rock in her hand a few times.

“So, it’s completely... just an emerald? No magic powers, no ‘stare at it long enough and you lose your mind’-” Az turned and gave her sister a look.

“Okay,” DG said with a sigh. “Just a rock.” She glanced at the pile of dresses covering Az’s bed and turned back to her sister.

“Please tell me the chainmail is going.”

Games
Cain found DG in one of the many libraries in the palace. He raised an eyebrow as he glanced over her shoulder at a stack of papers, each with funny drawings.

“What’s this, Kiddo?” DG smiled up at him and glanced back down to her homemade playing cards.

“Solitare.” She turned back to him and added: “I got bored.”

“Looks like there’s more than one,” he said, pointing to the cards as he pulled a chair up next to her.

“The game is called Solitare, Cain. Haven’t figured out how to get the cards to play themselves yet,” she shrugged.

Sugar
DG really wasn’t in a rush to get back to Kansas. Her stuff wasn’t that valuable - though she would like her sketchbooks, not to mention a new pair of jeans.

But she missed sugar. God, did she miss sugar.

The O.Z. equivalent wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t sugar.

It wouldn’t have been so bad, but she’d had the hiccups for two days.

Cain had laughed at her. Glitch wanted to study her. The only person who was on her side was Ahamo.

Raw tried to use his abilities to calm her affliction, but it didn’t work.

She needed sugar.

Dream
When she was tired, DG became grumpy. The more tired she was, the more she would fight to stay awake. The more she fought, the grumpier she became.

Glitch had passed out nearly an hour before, as had Raw. The Queen and Ahamo had taken Azkadellia down the hall, leaving DG in the company of Wyatt Cain.

He knew Jeb was fine, as they’d spoken earlier, but now he was trying to get her to sleep, because he was completely exhausted.

Then it clicked and he knew why she was fighting sleep.

“We’ll be here when you wake up, Kid.”

Poetry
‘Don’t look disinterested. You’re happy to be here. Most thrilling event of your life. Nod and smile. Smile and nod.’ DG beamed and gave the man across from her an approving turn of the head.

‘Please, God! Kill me now.’ Her eye caught Cain’s from beneath his hat. He had that schoolteacher ‘I can see you and I don’t approve’ look.

She couldn’t help it. When everyone in the room began clapping, she blinked and joined in, smiling again.

An hour later, she turned to Cain as they moved down the hallway.

“Royal decree: No more poetry readings.”

Cain agreed.

Empty
“Hank! Emily? ...DG?” Elmer Gulch began breathing heavily when he didn’t get a response. Something was very wrong. From the outside, it looked like the place had been hit by a twister. Inside, it looked like a break-in.

DG’s damn motorcycle was out front, as was Hank’s truck. He’d checked the storm cellar, but as there hadn’t been a report of twisters during the night, he was at a loss.

Something was wrong. Very, very wrong.

Maybe Carter had heard from them. Or at least knew if there was family they could call.

People didn’t just disappear into thin air.

Orchard
One of her first orders of royal business was to go back to the Papay fields. The four of them tried to talk her out of it - though they appreciated the thought - but she wouldn’t back down.

“Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Yes. If I can fix one thing, it can be this.”

They knew the magic could do the trick - they’d seen it before. But would the magic be enough to restore the Papay fields, not to mention the relationship between them and the hunters?

Taking a deep breath, Az stepped forward and raised her hand.

Popularity
The first week of the show, the house was packed. The second week, they added two shows. What started as a simple mentalist trick was suddenly the talk of Central City. People were coming from all over the Zone to see the astounding skills of the great and powerful Mystic Man.

It was just a simple card trick - one that didn’t actually involve a deck of cards - but it had the crowds amazed. Not bad for a math whiz from Kansas City.

Thank goodness that basic math skills and a deck of cards were alternately universal.

So to speak.

Hummingbird
Everyone was worried about DG. She was always going, staying awake late into the night and up before everyone in the morning. Raw could barely be in the same room with her; her mind was making so much noise he couldn’t keep up.

Ambrose was still glitching to a point that he didn’t have to try and keep up with her because she was just as scattered.

Cain seemed to be the only one who could slow her down long enough to eat a meal most days.

“You have to slow down, Kid. You can’t solve every problem at once.”

Garden
“I’m afraid.”

“What could you possibly be afraid of, Kid?”

DG looked up to Cain and then back down to the stone path. “What if I make it worse?” she asked a moment later, complete with a heavy sigh.

“We’ve been to worse, DG. And we got through it.”

She turned and stated: “My people skills are limited to ‘Would you like a refill?’ and ‘Anyone for pie?’”

Cain chuckled and his hand found hers. “You’ll do fine, Princess.” DG looked down to their hands and smiled. Turning her head toward him, she smiled.

“Back me up, Tin Man?”

“Always.”
