"Why do we have to go?"

"Because, Jeb, it's not safe. Now, please, finish putting your things away."

"But I don't want to, Mama. I don't want to go again. I want to stay here."

"Jeb Cain! ... Please, Jeb. Please just help me finish packing."

"No!"

"Jeb, come back-"

...

"I don't know what to do with that boy, Wyatt. He doesn't listen, he talks back, he gets into fights, he... he misses you."

...

"I miss you, too. And don't you be smiling at me. I'm still mad at you. Furious, even."

...

"Things are getting worse. The news from Central... it's not good. You wouldn't even recognize the place, anymore. ... I had to explain to Jeb what they were building in the city square. ... I thought gallows were something from the history books. Never thought I'd see them with my own eyes. I thought... I thought we were better than that."

...

"I'm so glad you died before... before they... That's a terrible thing to say, isn't it? I'm not glad you're gone, you know. I'm angry that you're gone. I'm angry with Zero. I want to... I want to see him hang in Central City Square."

...

"I shouldn't say that. It's not..."

"Who are you talking to?"

"I am talking to your father."

"Why?"

"Because he doesn't talk back. ... Are you going to help me pack?"

"I guess."

"Jeb. Come here."

"What?"

"We're not leaving because I want to, okay? It's because we need to. You understand?"

"Yeah."

...

"Mama?"

"Yes, Jeb?"

"Can I talk to Father, sometimes?"

"I think he'd like that, very much. You ready to go?"

"Ready."

"Me, too."
