DG glanced up at the dull gray sky and wondered if it would rain. Sensing movement, she looked back to the woman a few yards away and noticed the blonde moving back toward them. "Glitch," she whispered, getting her friend's attention back from the strange mechanical device that had been wedged into a post.
DG gave the woman an awkward smile as she neared, causing the blonde to stop. "Thank you," she finally said, giving DG a slightly-awkward glance.
"Missus Cain..." DG started and then paused. With a nod to the suit, she added: "How long were you in that thing?"
"Long enough," came a cold response. Adora couldn't even make herself look back. DG looked at Glitch, who shrugged, and then back to Adora, who was pulling her hair up into a tight bun. DG had to stop herself from pointing out that there were still traces of the silver dust on the woman's skin.
Adora moved past the both of them and headed for the cabin. She leaned down at the corner and pulled out a dented yellow box. "What are you doing?" DG asked automatically.
"I'm going to kill the man who killed my family," Adora replied as she pulled out a worn pistol. DG looked at Glitch again, wide-eyed, and the young brunette had to wonder if it had something to do with Glitch's mention of the man from the recording being the same one that had been looking for them at the Guild Fighter's camp.
"But Miss- Ma'am," DG started, "killing him won't bring anyone back." Besides, this Zero-guy had her locket and her parents were still missing. Adora turned slightly and gave DG a look, which would have been less intimidating if the woman hadn't been loading bullets into a pistol.
"At least don't kill anyone 'til I find my parents," DG bartered. "You can do whatever you want after." It wasn't the best deal she could have made, but DG knew she was way out of her element. And, really, after seeing the abuse the family had taken in the recording, DG wasn't exactly concerned with the welfare of the soldier.
"Fine," Adora replied as she fastened the holster from the box over her shoulders. Pushing the pistol into its slot, Adora pulled herself up and reached for the balled-up barn coat also in the box. Shaking it out, Adora slipped her arms into the sleeves and glanced up at DG. "Stay close and stay quiet." DG nodded and pulled on Glitch's arm, following as the woman started to walk away.
They'd been walking for about ten minutes before the silence finally got to DG. "Why were you in that thing?" DG asked as she hurried to keep up with Adora's determined pace.
"Didn't you see?" Adora responded, not realizing the loop had stopped early. In fact, she didn't even notice it had stopped, at all. It was the only thing she'd seen in eight annuals.
"My husband and I were in the Resistance, fighting against the rule of Azkadellia. Her army is brutal and the people deserve better," she spat out with each step. Adora stepped over a fallen tree, but didn't even break her cadence. "They found us. My husband tried to fight them, to give us time to leave," Adora continued with a frown. "I tried to help him, instead. And then my son tried to help me..." She stopped for a moment, giving a blank stare into the trees. "Zero ordered his men to take Wyatt and Jeb to the gallows in Central City Square, while he taught me a lesson in respect, before he killed me."
"And he put you in that thing? And made you watch that?" Glitch asked in disgust.
"Ever hear the phrase 'Hell hath no fury'?" DG asked with a slight chuckle as she glanced at her companion.
"Exactly," Adora muttered as she moved deeper into the woods.
