The thunder and lightning had finally passed over the farmhouse, leaving just the rain to now soak the dry soil. Unfortunately, the temperature was still stifling, inside the farmhouse and out. But, the storm had been welcome, as it hadn't rained in almost a month, and the crops the family depended on were at risk of being lost.

Now that the brunt of the storm was over, the windows were open in the hopes that the rain would somehow produce a slight breeze, or at least just cool things down. Ben had dressed quickly, then gone out to check the animals in the barn, before coming back to the house and giving the usual spots a once-over for leaks or storm damage.

Once he was content that the house would remain standing through the night, he pulled his pants and shirt off and headed back to the bedroom. The only thing that had been louder than the storm was his newborn daughter, who had been scared by the new, loud noises outside. And, now the silence inside the house was almost deafening.

As Ben reached the bedroom, he could hear the soft voice of his wife, singing to the little girl. Ben set his shirt and pants on the chair next to the door, then moved over to the rocking chair Lizzie was sitting in. She glanced up for just a moment, smiling at him as she continued the song. In her arms, little Adora was focused, droopy-eyed, on her mother's voice.

Lizzie smiled again as her daughter continued to fight a losing battle with sleep, but she didn't stop singing. Ben moved behind the rocking chair and leaned over the back of it, reaching around his wife to rest his very large hand on his daughter's very small head.

Adora squeaked and squirmed, turning her head toward the contact. Lizzie smiled, as her baby girl was most definitely a daddy's girl, even at her small size. Lizzie kept singing, knowing from previous nights that if she didn't finish the song, Adora wouldn't get to sleep. Ben had teased her that she'd never be able to leave them alone overnight, as he had absolutely chance of carrying a tune.

She always told him that, sooner or later, Adora would be able to get to sleep without the song, and she wouldn't leave either of them alone until both were ready for it. Ben's response, naturally, was that he'd be ready about five days after little Adora turned ninety annuals.

Lizzie continued the last verse, noting that her daughter's breathing had slowed, then glanced up to her husband. With a nod to him, Lizzie sat up straight then stood in a slow but swift motion. She moved over to the bassinet and carefully placed the infant back into her bed, then shifted her hand to rest on Adora's stomach.

Ben moved behind Lizzie and wrapped his arms around her, watching to see if the baby object to being put down or not. Adora fussed slightly, but didn't wake up. A moment later, she let out a little huff and Lizzie pulled her hand back. Leaning back against her husband's chest, Lizzie kept her gaze on Adora.

Ben smiled and pressed a kiss to Lizzie's shoulder, then whispered: "You gonna bless me, too?" Lizzie made a face and turned her head back to face him. He grinned and loosened his hold as she turned in his arms, then kissed her.

Note: The song Lizzie is singing is Celtic Woman's A Blessing, though in more of a lullaby tone. Just in case you were wondering. ♥
