The Chevy Tahoe was moving down the highway, on cruise, when Jack Skinner decided he needed a snack. Bill had given him the rest of the five-pound bag of M&Ms before they left the house, and peanut M&Ms were just the thing to tide him over until they got to Little Rock, even if there was only about a pound left.
Glancing away from the road, Jack turned and spotted the bag of candy in the crate on the floor, just behind his seat. Eyes back on the road, he reached back and caught the edge of the crate, then frowned when he couldn't find the bag. Looking away from the road again, he saw the bag and grabbed it.
Sighing as he faced the road again, Jack set the bag in his lap and returned his attention to the road as he came upon a slower-moving vehicle. Once past the small station wagon, Jack returned to his mission and pulled the clip from the bag, then tossed it into the cup holder. He made a string of glances between the road and the bag of M&Ms before finally lifting it up, slightly higher than his mouth, and giving the bag a shake.
Chewing on a mouthful of M&Ms, Jack looked at the road again and lowered the bag, resting the back of his hand on his leg. About a minute later, he lifted the bag and repeated the motion, giving the bag another shake, then dropping it again.
He didn't even notice that both Deb and Maddy were watching him with looks of mixed confusion and concern.
Giving the road another look, Jack moved his focus back to the bag, gave it a shake to see how many M&Ms were left and raised it up, once again. Looking up to the roof of the vehicle, Jack shook the remaining contents of the bag into his mouth. Next to him, Deb eyes went wide and she turned to look over her shoulder to Maddy, who was staring at her father with a similar expression.
Narrowing her eyes, Deb stared at her husband until he felt it and, when his head turned her way - slowly - she gave him a look that suggested he had just kicked a puppy. "Are you trying to kill us?" she asked. Jack's eyes darted up to the rear-view mirror, where he saw Maddy shaking her head.
Shifting in his seat, Jack slipped the empty bag between his seat and the center console and returned both hands to the steering wheel.
Jack was never allowed to have M&Ms in the car again.
