high hopes
"Do it, or are you a big chicken?" Claire asked, crossing her arms and glaring at her friend.
"I am not a chicken," Adora snapped. "This is silly," she shrugged and looked back toward the party.
"You just don't want to get stuck with Marcus," Judith laughed. Adora rolled her eyes slightly; she didn't want to get stuck with Marcus Danby at all. None of them did.
"All right, we'll make it easy," Claire nodded and unfolded her arms. Placing her hands on Adora's shoulders, she gave the thirteen-annual-old a shake and turned her back to the party. "Next boy who comes through the gate." Adora rolled her eyes slightly.
Everyone they knew was already at the party. Staring at the ground, Adora wondered how she'd let them talk her into this. All this because of a stupid pie... Her mother always said that a first kiss would happen when the time was right.
Who was Adora to mess with time?
the denial twist
"Oh, I hate you," she heard Judith breathe. Glancing up, all three girls looked across the field to see a group of boys coming down the path. Three of the most popular boys in the Guild. How were they not already at the party? Adora's eyes went wide and she tried to step back, but Claire still had a hold of her shoulders.
'Please,' she begged, 'anyone but-'
At the gate, Matthew and Phillip laughed as they shoved Wyatt Cain forward, making him the next boy to arrive. Judith and Claire shared a look before turning on Adora. "Any time," Claire offered, waving Adora along.
Frowning, Adora stepped past her friends and moved toward the party. She would make good on the deal, but it would be on her schedule. She wasn’t about to simply walk up to Wyatt Cain and kiss him, right there in front of everyone.
dangerous and sweet
Wyatt dropped the tin fork to his plate and leaned back in his chair. As soon as he finished chewing the bite of pie, he pointed to the plate and stated: "I'm gonna kiss whoever made this pie." Matthew and Phillip both looked up from their own plates of chicken and potatoes and vegetables and then looked at each other.
"Why did you start with the pie?" Phillip asked.
"Because," Wyatt explained, shoving another forkful of pie into his mouth, "every time we show up to one of these late, there's nothing left at that end of the table by the time we finish eating." The boys looked at each other, the end of the table with the cakes and pies and then their own plates and frowned.
As Wyatt continued to wolf down the pie, Matthew nudged Phillip and pointed toward the table, where Marcus Danby's aunt Lena was standing, chatting with some of the ladies. They kept pointing to the plates and nodding toward the blue ribbon. "Two Platinums says you don't," Matthew laughed.
Wyatt raised an eyebrow and glanced between Matthew and Phillip. He nodded and looked over his shoulder when they started laughing. Lena Danby was serving up a slice of pie for one of the farmers at the party. Grimacing, Wyatt turned back and stared at the pie. That woman scared him - as well as most kids in the area - because she was like that crazy aunt who always wanted to pinch your cheeks and kiss you and squeeze you until all the air was gone from your lungs.
"Whenever you're ready," Matthew managed to get out before snorting.
well that was easy
Phillip had gone up to see what was left of the cakes while Wyatt and Matthew were called over to help move some extra chairs out of the house. While he was looking at the chocolate cake, he heard Lena Danby mention to another woman that it was only right her pie should have taken the blue ribbon, not the red.
Glancing at the ribbons, Phillip saw that the red ribbon was next to the apple pie. The blue ribbon was with the lemon. Wyatt had been eating brambleberry pie. Pointing to the pie with only a few slices missing, Phillip asked: "Who made this one?" Lena eyed the pie with an almost disgusted look and shrugged.
"That one," she nodded across the way, where Adora was talking to a few of the smaller children near the porch. Phillip threw a quick look over his shoulder and smiled. He knew that Wyatt’s eye had fallen on Adora more than once in the last annual.
Matthew's pockets were going to be two Platinums lighter by the time the night was through.
no new tale to tell
He was almost at the end of the table when Judith grabbed his arm and pulled him to the corner of the house. "What are you three up to?" Phillip blinked and shook his head.
"Nothing," he said, almost a little to high-pitched. Judith raised an eyebrow and Phillip's shoulders fell. "Matthew bet Wyatt two Platinums that he wouldn't kiss whoever made the brambleberry pie." Judith blinked. "Only, Matthew thinks ol' Danby made the pie."
"But she didn't..." Judith said, shaking her head.
"I know that," Phillip said with a smirk. The two of them shared a smile and Judith titled her head toward Adora.
"Claire's pie got the ribbon. Adora had to kiss the next boy to arrive at the party." Phillip laughed. "You two shoved Wyatt past the gate," she said quietly, catching his hand. Phillip's eyes narrowed and she smiled.
"Oh, this is perfect," he whispered. Taking a second to make sure no one was watching, he stole a kiss and backed away from her. "Completely perfect."
complete control
Judith nodded and pulled him back, moving a bit further away from the party. "What do we do?" she asked. They both knew Wyatt and Adora liked each other, if all else by their insistence that they couldn't stand each other. Phillip shifted slightly and lifted a hand to his neck.
"He'll never follow me behind the barn," he said with a slight grin. She had, of course, followed him back there. "He'd know I was up to something." Judith nodded and frowned. Adora would know she was plotting against her because she'd never mastered a straight face.
At the sound of music starting up, both of them glanced up and pointed to each other. Phillip pulled Judith to him and kissed her quickly. "You are a genius." With that, he let go of her and pulled her toward the end of the house. He nodded toward Wyatt and Judith headed off across the yard. He waited a minute before moving around the edge of the house himself and turned toward the porch.
"Adora," he said with a nod.
"Hello, Phillip," she nodded in return.
"Care to take a spin?" he asked, waving to the area that had just become a dance floor. Adora's eyes narrowed, but she smiled.
"Why not," she said with a nod and took his offered hand.
losing streak
On the other side of the yard, Judith moved over to Wyatt's side and held out a hand. "You owe me a dance, Wyatt Cain." Wyatt raised an eyebrow, but didn’t argue. Letting her pull him up, he smiled as Judith pointed to him with her free hand and poked his chest. "Don't think I didn’t forget that time when we were seven."
Wyatt nodded as he wove through the crowd with Judith and gave her a spin once they reached the center of the makeshift dance floor. They twirled around with everyone else for a minute before Phillip led Adora in their direction. He gave Judith a nod and quickly caught her hand.
Before either of them realized what had happened, Wyatt and Adora were face to face. Wyatt immediately glanced down and Adora shot a glare toward Judith. 'Sorry,' she mouthed, putting on a face of absolute panic. Phillip spun her away, leaving both of them to stand awkwardly in the middle of the crowd.
All Adora could think was that Judith would never do that to her; Claire would, but not Judith. She prayed that her best friend hadn't told Phillip about the stupid bet. Wyatt realized that it could have been worse - he could be stuck with having to kiss Lena Danby - and offered a hand to Adora.
She took a deep breath and nodded, deeming the situation nothing more than a fluke. As if the situation wasn't weird enough, after two steps, the music shifted to a slower song and both Wyatt and Adora wanted to murder someone.
like eating glass
"Are you having a good time?" Wyatt asked after a few moments of awkward silence. "At the party," he added a second later.
"Yes," she replied, off-handedly and glanced away, giving Wyatt a change to turn away and roll his eyes at the stupidity of his question. Why was he acting like he was nervous? He wasn't nervous... was he?
Adora, on the other hand, wanted to throw up. She knew that Claire was somewhere in the crowd, watching to see if she would make good on the bet. She knew that she was standing awfully close to Wyatt. But, wasn't that what she wanted? To dance with him, to be 'his girl'...
Why was she so nervous?
'That's right,' Adora remembered, 'because he doesn't like you that way. You're hopeless,' she scolded herself.
Could this evening get any worse?
bridge to nowhere
"I hear Claire got the vote for the best pie this season," Wyatt offered, trying to break the silence. Adora flinched and pulled away slightly. 'Oh, no,' Adora's brain screamed, 'he knows. Everyone knows and I’m the big joke...'
"The lemon is hers, isn't it?" Wyatt asked, fairly certain that Claire always made something with lemons. "Are you all right?" he asked, noticing Adora had gone tense.
"Yes," she snapped, "I'm fine." Wyatt snorted slightly and shook his head.
"Yeah, you look like you're fine. Did I say something or-" he trailed with a shrug. Adora pulled her hands from his and shook her head.
"I'm just fine, thank you," she huffed. "If you'll excuse me, I need to help clean up," she nodded toward the long table of food. Before Wyatt could protest, she was gone.
"What did you say to her?" Wyatt spun around to see Judith, hands on her hips and a very unappealing scowl on her face.
"Nothing!" Wyatt replied, throwing his hands up defensively. "I was just trying to avoid the silence and she freaked out."
read my mind
Judith dropped her head to her hands and let out a low growl. "The two of you are going to make me crazy!" she said in a loud whisper. Wyatt's brow went up and Judith shook her head and raised her hands. "Okay, this is getting ridiculous. Do you like her?"
Flinching, Wyatt took a step back and raised his own hands. "Whoa, there." Shaking his head, he continued: "I do not like her. I mean, I like her, but I don’t like her." Judith made a face that told him, quite specifically, that she thought he was quite full of something similar to cow patties.
Sighing, Wyatt dropped his shoulders and closed his eyes. "Okay, maybe," he started, dropping his voice to a whisper, "I like her a little. But just a little!" he snapped as Judith's sneer turned into a smile.
"But she doesn't like me, so it doesn't matter," he shrugged with a thin, forced smile. Judith rolled her eyes and over-shook her head. Wyatt cocked his head slightly and fought the small grin. "Does she like me?" Judith's expression didn't change, but she nodded a few times. His brow furrowed and he turned, focusing on a random spot on the ground.
'She likes me?' Glancing back up to Judith, he noticed her nodding toward the barn on the hill. Turning, he could see Adora moving away from the party on her own. Wyatt spun back and grabbed Judith by the shoulders. "Thank you," he said, giving her a wide grin and leaning forward to kiss her cheek.
As he pushed through the crown, Phillip stepped next to Judith and they both watched as Wyatt cleared the edge of the crowd and tore up the rise after Adora. "You told him?" Phillip asked, finally turning to face her.
Judith shook her head. "I told him nothing of the sort," she snapped. Taking his hands as the next song started, she grinned. "I didn't even open my mouth." Phillip grinned and leaned forward to kiss her cheek.
the more you ignore me
"Adora," Wyatt called in a loud whisper. He'd almost caught up to her, half-way up the hill, but she'd kept moving. He actually started laughing as the incline became just steep enough that he slid back down a few inches, but he quickly recovered.
"Will you stop?" Wyatt shouted as he reached the crest of the hill and stopped to catch his breath. "Who builds a barn on a hillside, anyway?" he asked, not expecting an answer. Turning back, Wyatt glanced down to the party and shook his head. Remembering why he'd just hurried up the hill, Wyatt turned again and moved to the edge of the barn.
"Adora!"
"What?!" she screeched, spinning around as his hand caught her arm. "Why are you following me?" Wyatt reared back and raised his hands.
"I'm sorry!" he replied angrily. All she ever managed to do was make him angry; he actually considered she might enjoy that knowledge.
Adora turned away and groaned. Couldn't this night just end so she could go home and try to forget any of it had happened? She didn't care what Claire said; she had to intention of making good on the bet. Not now, not ever.
Especially not with Wyatt Cain.
you only live once
"I swear," Wyatt huffed and spun around, throwing his arms in the air, "it's like when my parents argue." Adora spun around and stared, as if she'd just been slapped in the face.
"Excuse me?" Wyatt's jaw locked and his eyes narrowed. Raising a finger, he pointed to her.
"You just won't let a person get a word in!" Adora's eyes went wide and her mouth opened, but no sound came out. "You just stomp off and-" Wyatt took a deep breath and shook his head. "Look," he started, forcing the calm, "I am sorry."
"For what?" Adora asked, not knowing what he was talking about. Wyatt blinked and shrugged.
"For asking you about Claire's pie." Adora started to respond, but Wyatt kept going. "I told Matthew and Phillip that I would kiss whoever made the pie, because it was that good," he said with a nod. "Matthew bet me two Platinums I wouldn't and I agreed before I even thought about it. He points to the table," Wyatt said, pointing behind him, down to the table, "and there's Lena Danby."
"That's horrible," Adora managed to get out as she bit back a smile - because it wasn't funny - but the smile creeping up Wyatt's face - because she was smiling - made her snort.
"No, it's pretty funny," he nodded. "And, then, Phillip and Judith went and-" he said with another wave toward the party, "and asking you if Claire, for once in the history of the Outer Zone, hadn't made something with lemons sounded much better than saying 'Hey, how are you? I have to kiss Danby.'" Wyatt dropped his shoulders in defeat and stared at the ground.
"What will you do?" Adora asked quietly.
"Me?" Wyatt's head shot up. "Oh, I'm going to completely embarrass myself and beg my father to lend me two Platinums and I swear, on this barn," he said, slapping a hand to the siding, "that I will never even look at another brambleberry as long as I live."
'But Lena Danby didn't make the-' her brain realized. With that, Adora got a sudden rush of courage and pushed Wyatt against the barn, leaned forward and closed her eyes. The kiss was quick and simple, and had taken Wyatt completely by surprise. After a moment, Adora pulled away and immediately found the ground very interesting, thankful it was dark enough that no one could see her blushing.
"What was that for?" Wyatt stuttered as his brain tried to wrap around the idea of Adora kissing him.
"You liked my pie," Adora replied quietly. She felt quite the fool for the admission, but that someone, anyone - he - liked the pie...
"You made the pie?" Wyatt asked, as his brain tried to shift gears. Adora looked up and her eyes locked on his.
"I made the pie," she said with a single nod. Wyatt looked away for a moment and a smile crept up the side of his face.
"You know what this means," he prompted, looking back to Adora.
"You have two Platinums," Adora nodded, glad that her debt was settled, and that she'd managed to kiss Wyatt Cain and get away with it. Wyatt shook his head, which caused Adora confusion.
"I don't have to kiss Danby," he replied, looking rather ecstatic. "I love you- I mean," he jumped. Adora couldn't help but smile.
"I know what you mean. Glad I could help," she offered, with a slight tinge of sarcasm. The sound of music wafting up the hill caught both their attention. Wyatt turned slightly and then looked back to Adora.
"Would you like to dance?" Adora nodded and gave him a shy smile. Taking a step toward him, she reached for his offered hand. Just before they reached the edge of the path leading back down the hill, Wyatt stopped. "Adora?" he asked quietly.
"Yes, Wyatt?" Adora replied, turning her head to face him. Wyatt leaned over and kissed her. Keeping her eyes closed for a moment as he pulled away, Adora opened her eyes to see Wyatt Cain smiling at her.
"Now I have two Platinums."
