They were being sent to die. It was the only reason why Kirin was assigned to go with Jamie, and only Jamie. When it was thought that they were still valuable assets to the Company, they were reassigned and kept apart. Things ended better that way.
He could hear them talk, he may have been crazy, but he wasn't deaf. It was so often that they would talk about him while he was in the room. Oh, don't mind him, he doesn't care. He doesn't even know he's here.
Jamie was expendable. Kirin was a liability. It wouldn't be a loss if they didn't survive. With the information gathered about the militant group, the odds of any operative surviving any attempt of assault was near impossible. The plan was to send Kirin so that the problems of the militia and Kirin would hopefully cancel each other out.
And Kirin looked forward to it.
