Peter let out another sigh. He would've preferred to the guilt ridden non-sleep to a surprise visitor.

Pretty sure it wasn't Zach since he'd been something of an ass to the kid to the last time he came over and had probably scared Zach away.

Probably not his mom since she was sorting out funeral stuff and doing whatever it was that she did at her house.

Certainly not Nathan since even though they'd been near each other for almost twelve hours, they hadn't said anything more then "hello" "how are you?" and "are you still coming for Christmas?". Not including the few times when they'd talk about their father's death, of course and that was mostly about the funeral.

So it was pretty safe to assume that Nathan was still mad at him and therefore, would not be stopping by for a courtesy call. That left Jack and Izaiah--and if it was them, Peter was going to slam the door in their faces--or his neighbors. Who he didn't want to talk to either ( ... )

Visions conjured out of not being able to sleep and having a power that was deadset on driving you insane did not talk. That much Peter was sure of. But the Claire in the hallway had spoken and he wasn't so far gone that he was imagining voices. Hopefully.

So not impossible to have Claire standing in the hallway in front of his apartment. Just highly improbable and my God, she had the worst timing ever.

Peter arched an eyebrow and stared at her for a couple more seconds before letting out his breath quietly and stepping back, leaving the door open for her. What? It wasn't like he was going to pull her into his apartment, no matter how badly he wanted to.

"I'd ask you why you're here but..." he shrugged as he turned around to face her. The why was pretty much obvious. She'd been talking about visiting him for days and he wasn't entirely sure of the exact date. It very well could've been the 20th for all he knew.

"So how about how'd you get here?"

Nathan.

Nathan brought her here.

Nathan, his only brother, would rather bring Claire all the way from Texas and face a legal mess, and that was putting it lightly, then forgive Peter. That... was just great.

Peter knew that his brother had promised to help Claire out if she needed it and that he'd stand behind the promise, no matter the personal circumstances, like being mad at his little brother and his father dying, but this was getting a little ridiculous. Maybe Peter wouldn't go to his house for Christmas.

He didn't say anything for a long time, staring at the ground and passing his hands through his hair a couple times, just thinking. Claire was in New York, in his apartment because Nathan had brought her there and... he was really confused.

"What happened?" he asked softly.

Peter was sure of three things now.

His relationship with his brother wasn't as good as he'd hoped it to be.

He wasn't much of a fan of Zach anymore. It was one thing to mention that you knew somebody could heal or fly to the guy who was going to train you how to use your power. Quite another to just tell your buddy about what someone else could do. And especially Claire, whom Peter was unnaturally protective of.

And that Claire hadn't run to New York just because of him. Something he was actually glad for because if this was all his fault, then.. that would be bad. That whole going slow thing and all.

"You don't have to apologize for coming here," he said, with as much feeling as he could summon. Not a lot but it was an effort and it was the thought that counted right?

"I take it..." he paused, deciding that 'your parents' would be a bad phrase. "... the Bennets don't know you're here then?"

Well... that just made everything harder.

It was one thing for her parents to know she was there because then he'd have to send her back. Well, he had to send her back anyway... because of that whole being a minor thing and he was rather fond of not going to prison.

But if they didn't know she was with him, he wouldn't be as pressed to give her back to the people she belonged to. And that made her sound like a dog. Great.

"Claire..." Peter sighed, passing his hand through his hair. He sat down on the arm of his couch and looked at her.

"You have to tell them something. Not where you are if you really don't want to but... at least call them and let them know you're..." not safe. You're with the most perverted and messed up person in New York City "...okay."
