On normal days, coffee served to calm Peter down. Weird considering the caffeine in the drink but he reacted differently to caffeine. It was like a security blanket. The more of it he had, the calmer and more aware of the world around him he felt.

Today was not one of those 'normal' days.

Today he was meeting his brother in Central Park. Not that unusual, yes. Thrown in Claire meeting them there so Nathan could judge her secret keeping capabilities and see what was so special about this cheerleader his younger brother wanted so fiercely to protect and it was suddenly a day made to be awkward.

Peter sighed, fiddling with the lid of his half empty coffee cup as he approached Nathan, dragging his feet as much as he could. "You promised to be nice," he reminded Nathan, coming to a stop beside his brother.

He took a long drink of his coffee, hoping that the caffeine would kick in sooner rather then later. "I seriously won't talk to you again if you're mean to her."

"Good afternoon. You must be Claire."

To his credit, Nathan was actually smiling.

"Peter's told me almost nothing about you, except that you're like us. I'm sorry if this's inconvenient, but I wanted to meet you, all things considered."

She still looked damn young.

Still, he'd promised to be nice, and she was... oddly inspiring protective urges. Something about the combination of youth and the maturity that you only really got when your entire world came crashing down around your ears.

"He said that you could heal. And that you know about -- me and him. That I can fly. I know I don't have to explain how important it is that that stays between the three of us."

He offered her another smile.

"But I promised not to lecture, so I won't. Peter says you're trustworthy, and he's a good judge of character."

While he knew that Nathan had promised to be good and not say anything mean and they had just been over the conditions of that deal right before Claire joined them, the fact that Nathan actually was being nice was starting to confuse Peter.

It wasn't in Nathan's nature to be nice to people he'd just met unless he wanted something from them and the only thing he could want from Claire was for her to leave Peter alone and he wouldn't be nice about that.

He watched them talk for a moment, trying to see if he could figure out what Nathan's game plan was and head him off before he said something stupid to Claire. But Nathan wasn't giving off any indication that he disliked Claire. Another confusing thing considering he'd been ready to distrust her immensely.

"Not doing it's job," Peter replied, glaring at his coffee cup before looking back up at her with a soft smile. Okay, maybe he didn't need the coffee. She was calming him down enough and he was almost able to forget that Nathan was standing right next to him.

It wasn't in Nathan's nature to be nice to people he'd just met. But this girl meant a lot to Peter, that much was obvious just from the way they looked at each other, and besides... Nathan was sort of impressed. She was young, but she was well-spoken and she seemed mature.

He chuckled at her comment about Peter only telling her good things, saying lightly, "then he can't have told you much about me. I'm a lawyer, I've got a wife and two boys, and I don't give Pete enough credit for knowing who he can talk to. I have to admit I was kind of pissed when he told me you knew about us."
