Jamie stood silently by Kirin's side at the nurses' station, holding onto the other boy's hand tightly. Okay. The elevators had not been fun. He'd held his breath the entire time, afraid with each creak and groan that they were going to get stuck and would be trapped in their forever.
It hadn't made for a very relaxing minute and a half.
Nervously, Jamie wondered just how bad off Jimmy was. Kirin hadn't said much to him about it, and he hadn't pushed, but now...he was worried. Hospitals weren't good things and they certainly didn't hold good memories. Silently, Jamie hoped the other boy was already improving.
She hadn't quite drunk enough for a hangover the previous night, which meant the ache at the back of her neck probably had more to do with the fact that she'd slept in a chair, again. She couldn't help it. Her hotel made her restless.
It was daylight by the time she woke up, her short nap somehow turned into a few hours' proper sleep. Dragging the heels of her palms over her eyes, she stifled a yawn.
Jimmy had been awake for some time now, but he didn't want to rouse her just for her to keep him company. She wasn't sleeping nearly enough. He listened to the loud metered sounds from the machines around his bed, the noises and the discomfort from where they were attached to him, assured him that he was still alive.
"I thought I told you to go to bed." he said, his voice sounding foreign to his ears, dry and raspy. Jimmy tried to remember the schedule of his specialists visits for the day, the nurse had told it to him before she added another dose of sedative to his IV the night before.
"I did," she stretched languidly. "I improvised." Her shoulders cracked and she sighed because no way was she going to be in the mood to deal with a rookie today. As if you weren't a rookie until yesterday, right.
Rising from her chair, she moved to kiss his brow, glad that he'd slept the night through, glad that he was alive. It was over dramatic, perhaps, but she wasn't taking anything for granted anymore.
Kirin knocked softly on the door and peeked inside. It had taken the pair longer to reach Jimmy's room due to a concerned nurse recognizing Kirin and insisted on him having his lungs checked properly. It was something he had avoided doing the night of the explosion, which earned him a lecture from both the nurse and later Jamie.
He didn't care about all of that, he really cared about whether Jimmy was okay. Kirin smiled when he saw that Jimmy was awake. "Hey, we're not interrupting anything, are we?" he asked with a sheepish grin, tugging on Jamie's arm as he stepped into the room.
