It had been a very exciting and very nervous 15 hour flight from Tokyo to Texas, including their layover in Dallas, before getting on board a local flight that took Hiro and his boss to Midland International Airport.
The heat was the first thing that surprised Hiro. It was not humid like a Tokyo summer, but the temperature was much much hotter. He was starting to regret wearing his suit and packing a jacket, but you had to be able to impress the clients, even if they were not going to be actually meeting for a few hours.
It had given him time, though, on the flight to review how to describe Yamagato's impressive software material in English good enough to convince the big companies attending the conference. Currently, he was to be the representative for the booth in the assembly hall, while boss-san would handle the actual presentation during the work dinner scheduled for one of the days.
Staring out at the strangely flat world around him, Hiro felt lost, as even in Tokyo, he had the concrete canyons as navigation, whereas large houses and farms stretched to the horizon, as far as he could see. Golds and the browned green greeted his eye, and Hiro felt small, lost in America with no real idea of the world around him.
The taxi pulled up to the Chatham Mansion, and Hiro and his boss got out, taking their baggage into the building where a porter took the luggage up to the suite where the two Japanese businessmen were staying. The porter couldn't help but stare at the uncommon sight of these men from the land of the rising sun.
Hiro couldn't help staring himself, but this was in awe at the immense white mansion. Amazed by the displays of grandeur in this old Texan home, Hiro felt like a child among the massive decorations. Golden chandeliers hung from the ceiling and murals were painted across the ceiling.
Boss-san looked expectedly over at Hiro, and Hiro shook his head embarrassedly, "ごめんなさい、でも、米国人に食べなければなりません。"
Boss-san's expression immediately changed to one of amazement, and smiled, "おめでとうござい、広。これはすばらしいだね!"
”あのうう、はい。すばらしいです、” Hiro replied, and moved to the front desk, "I wood like taxi, please."
Within a few minutes, a yellow cab had arrived, and Hiro entered expectedly, smiling at the driver despite the jet lag and the late morning hour, "Hello! I wood like go to Burnto Toasto Dineru," he said, emphasizing the last few words so they would be as clear as possible to the American, who grunted, pulled down his cowboy hat, and headed off with a smile as big as Hiro's.
In a few minutes, they had arrived at the small diner, Hiro paid the cab driver, and entered the diner, smiling at getting to meet the first of his American friends.
