Summary: After Kirin's run in with an unfavorable stranger, Jimmy is called to the hospital.

It had been a trial of a morning. Before Jimmy could even finish breakfast, the house phone rang. While his father wasn't pleased at the interruption, the man felt sympathetic after he learned it was Jimmy's friend, even going so far as to drive his son to the hospital on the way to work. Kirin had Jimmy's number listed as an emergency contact at the school, and they were unable to get any other information from the teen en route to the emergency room. Jimmy was unsure whether Kirin was unable to tell them or that the boy didn't want to. Knowing his friend, it was probably the latter.
By the time they let Jimmy in to see him, most of the exposed skin on Kirin's body was covered in gauze and bandages, the rest a deep red Jimmy was becoming far too familiar with. Kirin was also under the influence of whatever was coming through his IV line, most of what the boy said before drifting off into sleep almost sounded like nonsense. Almost.
Glancing at his cellphone, he sighed as he realized there was no signal in Kirin's room. He dug in his wallet for the calling card he got for his birthday and never used, then he moved his chair to the phone near Kirin's bed.
