Jimmy was normally awake at that hour, but practice combined with restless nights before finally caught up to him. Candice's reply came in the form of even and slow breathing. Laying on his back, Jimmy had fallen asleep staring at the ceiling, barely even taking the effort of slipping under his blankets .

She felt a little like a thief and a little like something out of a movie, something unreal that would change the moment Jimmy woke up and saw her there. She should have known surprises were a bad idea, considering how they'd left things.

His father's room just down the hall and yet there she stood, with no intention of leaving.

"Jimmy," she called again, a little softer this time, because the thought of waking him was swiftly taking the backseat in her mind.

Still, no response. Jimmy's eyes moved rapidly underneath his eyelids, his consciousness held in a vivid dream. The only voice he could recall were the plays his coach drilled him on hours before, the brief intrusion of a more familiar voice registered but faded as he tried to make sense of the scenes in his dream.

Checking the door to make sure it was locked, Candice hastily sat down upon the bed, unsure. Should she wake him? It was the sensible thing to do. He'd be happy to see her, certainly.

So why wasn't she? Instead, fingers traced the back of his hand, the length of his arm, the strong curve of his shoulder. She liked his room, quiet and dark as it was.

She wondered what he saw behind closed eyes. "Wake up, Jimmy." This she whispered in his ear, her body stretched out next to his.

Jimmy inhaled sharply once, turning his head towards her voice. He squinted in the dark, disoriented and far from alert.

"I'm up," he replied, his voice thick from sleep. Even as he said the words, Jimmy himself doubted it was true. He closed his eyes again, exhaling softly. "You're in New York."
