Nudging the door open with his hip, Lance set his own lunch on his desk, crossing to Alex's office and poking his head in, holding up the bag and quirking an eyebrow at him.

"So yeah, let's talk

Alex pulled the bag open and inspected the contents. Once he confirmed that he got exactly what he asked for to the last detail he went through the task of eating.

"Instead of answering phones and running errands," he reached for the plastic knife in the bag, "you would assist me in actual case work. Research, analysis, manage files, draft letters, or whatever else I ask of you that you can handle. Obviously, I'd have to teach you how to do some of the tasks, but I wouldn't waste my time if I didn't think you couldn't do it."

He paused and looked over at Lance. "Are you still interested?"

Lance thought a moment, digging french fries out of the bag. It sounded hard. Which he was, for once, okay with. He could use a challenge. It was honestly time to grow the fuck up.

He nodded. "Yeah, I am."

"You will sometimes be expected to join me in the courtroom," Alex warned, secretly pleased that Lance didn't back down from the offer. "Which requires a stricter dress code. Jacket, tie, dress shoes, and no jeans. In fact, from now on I'm going to expect you to dress more professionally. Get used to wearing a tie from now on."

And there went any delusion of being mature, a scowl flitting over his features.

"I don't even have anything like that," he protested. He couldn't remember if he'd ever worn a tie.

"Considering you've worn the same outfit several days in a row, that doesn't surprise me." Alexander picked up half of his sandwich. "After lunch, I will remedy that issue."
