Another Christmas spent without her mother. Although this was her favorite holiday, her favorite time of the year overall, Beatrice always tended to feel just a little melancholy as well whenever Christmastime rolled around. Dad and Amy were downstairs getting food and decorations ready. A few last-minute touches on the tree and it would be perfect. Sophie would make sure it was perfect. Or as close as it was humanly possible to be.

Bea had heard the brief snippets of conversation as she came out of the bathroom. She had spent the last hour in the kitchen with Amy, working on the turkey. Her hands had been filthy with grease. She followed her stepsister into the room and leaned against the doorframe with her typical smirking smile. "I see you found the special wrapping paper I got you."

He bit his lip against a smile. It had been a long time since he'd spent time with his cousins, and it had been even longer since he'd spent Christmas with anyone but Karen... who he had left at home, and felt pretty bad about it. But it wasn't often he got to come up, and Karen would make things awkward..

Zane raised his hand to knock on the door, hesitating, and then rang the doorbell, shoving his hands back in his coat-pockets. He always forgot how cold it got here.

"It better not be all you got me," said Sophie, mock-harshly and brandishing the scissors. "Now turn around, I think one of these is for you."

At that point the doorbell rang. "Or possibly you could go get that. I should have it covered before you're back."

"Of course not," said Beatrice with a wrinkle of her nose. "Would I forget to get something for you? I think not."

Although sorely tempted to stay and try to sneak a peek at her present from Sophie, it was hardly fair. And the parental units surely still had their hands full with the tree. She ran down the stairs and jumped the last two. The holidays tended to make her far more hyper than usual. Twisting the knob and flinging the door open, she broke into a wide grin at the sight of her cousin on the steps.

"Oh goodie, you actually still remember where we live," said Bea teasingly. She stepped aside to let him in. "Come on, we have hot chocolate, cider, and eggnog. With alcohol," she added with a knowing nod.

"Alright, well get me some of that," he said with a laugh, putting a hand on her arm as he walked by.

"It's been a long time, man. How's tricks?"
