DUDE. THIS NEVER EVEN OCCURRED TO ME. I LOVE YOU FOR THINKING OF IT.

I love that we know enough about the reapers now to put that Jack the Ripper incident in proper context. A lot of people have trouble with Grell's characterization because her first appearance in canon is so patently psychotic, whereas all later appearances are much cuter and sillier. This may just be my headcanon, but I feel like the cute, silly Grell is the closest to her true personality, with the Jack the Ripper thing having been brought about by a very specific set of circumstances - namely, Grell finding a kindred spirit in Madam Red, who shared in her frustrations...

And, of course, knowing what we do now about Will and Grell's backstory and the experience that William had, the entire affair takes on a whole new layer of meaning that I hadn't even keyed into! Great insight there, hon. Unnnf.

THOSE FRICKIN SONG LYRICS. THAT IS WHAT DID IT. It was pretty much just: "oh hey, William's character song...LET'S GO WRITE SOMETHING FROM GRELL'S PERSPECTIVE, HOW ABOUT THAT?" (_ _)

That's something like half the reason I started in on this. I was thinking about the OVA, and about the issues I have a lot of the time writing her character. I was watching the OVA again with subtitles this time, and I noticed (and lol'd) that Grell got a C in ethics. It made me consider the differences in how the two of them perceive death, and that sort of melded with my wanting to write something that reconciled (for me, at least) the two different sides of Grell - the crazy one we see in the ripper arc and the flamboyant one we see in some of the calmer episodes. (I could ramble for a while about this, but I choose not to because it would be obscenely long.) In case you can't tell by the story above, I'm inclined to agree with your presented headcanon.

This is way awesome! I love the exploration of Will's empathy for the dying clashing with Grell's flighty theatrical approach to death. It does also illuminate that connection between psychotic Grell and silly Grell, with them being not all that different. I also find it interesting that Will has the most human-like view of the value of human life, where Grell's is implied to be closer to the normal view of Shinigami, where unsanctioned killing is looked down upon, but is nothing a little paperwork and punitive demotion won't clear up.
