The first kiss came the day after Mihawk’s challenge arrived. The words of the swordsman’s letter-spoken in Nami-san’s trembling voice as she read it to them-were still lingering, still ringing faintly in his ears as his shoulder was grabbed and he was turned, pushed against the counter, and kissed.

“Wh-What the fuck, Zoro?!” He stammered, flustered, the moment he was released. He reached up to wipe his mouth with his sleeve as he stared, wide-eyed, at the other man and tried to will away the hot blush that was rapidly spreading over his face.

Zoro offered no explanation, no excuse, no apology. He was leaving the galley before Sanji could even think to kick the shit out of him, and when his leg lashed out, all it met was air.

“Shitty marimo!”

The second kiss came the following night, when it was dark and everyone was sleeping as Sanji returned to the men’s bunk from his watch. He followed the snores of the swordsman to the couch and shook the man awake, none-too-gently.

“Your turn.”

Zoro grumbled something nonsensical and Sanji gave him one more shake-for the hell of it-before stepping back…only to have a hand reach out and grab his shirt and yank him down for a rough meeting of lips.

“Bastard,” he hissed, pulling away instantly and taking several steps back as Zoro slowly stood up from the couch. “What the hell is your problem?”

“I don’t have a problem.” Zoro brushed past him and went up for his watch.

Sanji stood where he was for several moments, seething, scowling at the empty couch before deciding to knock Usopp out of his hammock and take that instead.

The third time, Sanji kinda got into it. He couldn’t help himself. By that point-two days after the last one-he was so irritated with the swordsman, that the only thing he could do was kiss him back. Zoro seemed surprised, stilling for a moment, until Sanji bit angrily at his bottom lip; then he surged forward, pushing Sanji against the storage room wall and pressing into him, hard.

Sanji wasn’t sure what possessed him. Frustration, anger-hell, maybe even lust. All he knew was that his hands were all over Zoro and Zoro’s hands were all over him, their legs were scissoring together, their tongues were dueling quite vehemently, and it almost felt good.

A broad hand palmed his ass and Sanji couldn’t suppress the moan that escaped his throat, his head falling back and hitting the wall with a thunk. “Zoro…”

And then, just as suddenly and inexplicably as it’d happened, it ended. Zoro pulled away from Sanji like he was on fire, eyes a little wide and neck muscles working as if he was searching for his voice, searching for words.

“What?” Sanji snapped, nearly breathless, and annoyed to find that he just wanted to be kissed again.

“There’s something-I want to tell you,” he said slowly, haltingly, like it was killing him to speak.

“What?”

“I-” Zoro’s hands fisted at his side and he frowned darkly, turning swiftly. “Fuck it.”

Sanji stared incredulously after him and slid slowly down to the floor.

What. The. Fuck.

The fourth kiss-two more days later-came five minutes before Zoro left for his fight. The fight.

“Oi.”

Sanji turned warily from where he was washing dishes in the sink, ready to rip off the man’s mouth if he dared to try another kiss-and-run.

“I’m going to tell you something before I go.”

Oh god, he’d probably prefer another kiss-and-run.

“Sanji,” he said, sounding like he was making the biggest declaration of his life, which he very well might be, “I lo-”

“Wait.”

“What?”

“Not right now.”

Zoro looked ready to strangle him. “Dammit, cook, I need to tell you-”

“No. Tell me later.” Sanji wiped off his suds-covered hands and approached the swordsman, careful but certain. “Tell me when you get back.”

Zoro blinked, anger draining from his expression, and he smiled when Sanji leaned in and kissed him.
