Titel: Ready
Team: Weiß (Titanic)
Challenge: Romantik/Intimität: Gefühl vs. Vernunft - Für mich
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Rating: PG
Genre: Slash, Er, Fluff
Warnungen: None
Zusammenfassung: Aaron contemplates if he’s ready to take the next step…

Ready

“Well, the Collins’s obviously had issues before Jeffrey, but the accident and his paralysis pushed it over the edge.”

It’s not an answer, not really, but the best Aaron can offer. Dave inclines his head ever so slightly, lifts one eyebrow in a way that suggests, for him, the answer is enough, the case closed. He has long since learned that sometimes there are cases when they just won’t find all the answers, when it has to be enough that they stopped the killer and made sure they won’t hurt anybody else. It’s one of the things Aaron really admires about his friend. How he is able to get closure from this. So, it doesn’t really come as a surprise when Dave changes the subject.

“I guess so. - So, what time should I pick up Jack tomorrow?”

Ah, yes, tomorrow. The FBI triathlon. His big day. Time to confess the tiny little detail he had intentionally left out, when he asked Dave to look after Jack. He sorts through his papers without really looking at them. Just to give his hands something to do, so he won’t be rubbing his neck in embarrassment.

“I have to leave by 5:00 a.m.”

The face Dave pulls says it all. He may be many things, but early riser is not one of them. Having to leave home at 4:15 a.m. the latest is not something he’s looking forward to. But he stands by his word.

“Okay… well, I tell you what: You put on the coffee and I’ll be there.”

“Thanks.”

A lump forms in his throat and he has to look away. Tears are burning in his eyes, threaten to spill over as his emotions overwhelm him. Such a small word. It’s all he has and yet it can never convey how grateful he is to have Dave in his life, for everything his friend has done for him. For looking after Jack, for not even hinting that he might stay the night, even when it would make thinks so much easier, for pulling himself back, keeping their secret, when it must have almost killed him inside, for never pushing, always allowing Aaron to set the pace for their relationship. Even now.

“So, you’re nervous? I mean, it’s not too late to back out.”

Aaron contemplates the question for a moment. To an outside observer it might sound, as if Dave is asking about the triathlon, but he isn’t - not primarily anyway - and they both know it. Is he ready? It was his decision. He doesn’t want to hide any longer, not from Jack, not from his team, not from the few people in this world he truly considers his family. Yes, there were reasons, but he had allowed reason to rule his life for far too long. So, yes, he is ready. Nervous as hell, but ready. He swallows down the lump, offers Dave a shaky smile.

“I’m ready… maybe.”

Dave laughs slightly. There is no disappointment in his eyes on the last statement. Yes, Dave is hoping, that he truly is ready, that he’ll really tell the team tomorrow, but if he doesn’t, if he would pull back in the last second, Dave would still be there afterwards, would still hold him tight in the nights and be by his side, patiently waiting for the next try. And that’s all the persuasion Aaron needs. He leans over the table, places his hand over Dave’s, caresses his knuckles with his thumb.

“You know what, why don’t you come home with me.”

Their fingers intertwine and the smile that lights up Dave’s face could rival Garcia. A solid warmth settles in his guts, tells him everything he needs to know. He is ready.
